here is another idea a fellow told me about years ago and i modified it a bit

the otter board
otter.JPG
you start with a piece of board about 3 feet long x 9 inch x1 inch and cut the 2 ends at a 45 degree angle
then nail a strip of lead on the bottom, the lead will make the board stand upright in the water then put 2 picture hooks in centre of the board about 1 foot apart and join a piece of wire between them with a keyring on the wire them join a long bit of builders line to the keyring
then connect your fishing line with the polo mint and rig to the picture hook

how it works

after you set up the board in the water start walking along the shore and pull the builders line gently and feed out the line at the same time, when you pull the line the angle on the board will make the board go away from you
otter board.JPG
when the polo mint releases the bait and then the angle on the other end of the board will bring the board back in again
I tried it on a lake years ago and it worked fine but I don't know how well it would work on the sea

Id say the drag through the water reeling the board back in would knacker you after 1 retrieve, and imagine if you had a good fish on :!:

the problem exist if you want to get a big bait out over 250m,the world record for casting is just over 300 yard with a 5.25 ozs the balloon rig could bring the 5.25 ozs lead and a whole mackerel out way past that

I already covered the helicopter fishing thing http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/bull ... helicopter

you would have no problem with the board after the polo mint releases the bait, the angle at the other end of the board will help bring it back easy,it cuts through the water,I made one of the boards a few years ago and I was surprised how well it worked

a very common rig in south africa when shark fishing off the breakwaters.very effective on a dropping tide and the wind at your back enables you to fish big baits at very big distances.nice to see a fella trying something new, when you land a monster fish don,t tell the critics

the balloon will stay on the line because the line is run through the swivel on the balloon and when you retrieve the line the balloon will come back in as well, this way you wont be adding more litter to the sea

I just love how the same few lads try every few weeks to sabotage one of my post, its about time ye copped on a bit,if ye put a bit more effort in to a bit of research on the balloon rig ye would see that balloons are used in fishing all over the world

I could go on and on,google fishing balloon rig and 197,000 results show up
its a joke of an idea ... Get a life and enjoy angling the way it should be done and if ye cant then change hobbies :
which shop can I buy that book that you have that shows the way that angling should be done
masterkeane wrote:this is not "SHORE ANGLING" its rediculous ,if ye want to catch bigger fish out further get a bleedin boat
how would you describe shore angling?,is it some one that fishes with over 500 euro of gear and doing everything by the book or is it some one that brakes a branch of a tree and ties a bit of line to it.to me they are both shore angling as they both have a line in the water

not everyone that fishes from the shore takes the fishing so serious as some lads on the site do   ,a lot of lads on the site just like being out by the sea and trying different methods to see what works, experimenting with different rigs has worked well for me and has increased me species and catch rate in the last few years

I would love to see more lads posting up the ideas that they have tried out but i am sure they know if they do they will get the same crap I do

if any lad has any good ideas pm me and I will post them up without saying whose idea it is like in the link here http://www.btinternet.com/~kevin.l.j.kn ... r-tips.htm

that's all I am going to say about that, try all ye like to wind me up and get the topic locked but I am not going down that road that leads to a bit argument, lads if ye don't like the polo mint and balloon rig don't bother trying it,if the topic bothers ye so much don't click on it to open it but what ye should do is open yer minds to new ideas and different ways of fishing

just think about it,all the rigs ye use from the book started from a idea a lad had or from a experiment they tried out

Have to agree with you Gerry, dont mind the knockers - more time on their hands than common sense some lads

Gerry, without trying to start an argument or anything but have you caught any fish with this rig that you wouldn't have caught with you usual methods and casting distances?

As they say, the proof is in the pudding. I think that lots of people would take your ideas a bit more seriously if you showed them the proof that they work.

Alex

Edit: Ok, so i just looked at the videos you posted up and a couple of things struck me. Firstly, two were using the balloons off a boat, and i don't think anyone on the site has a problem with that, its a very well used method of catching blue shark. Secondly, in the one video i did see where they were fishing from the shore, there was clearly a strong offshore wind and the balloon still wasn't that far out. Within casting distance anyway.

I think what lots of lads on the site cant see is WHY you would bother? If you need extra distance, learn how to cast :? . I appreciate that you are trying new methods but it does seem to be a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

stop taking it personally gf, its nothing about you the rig will not work on any beach i know of on the east coast, as they all have a run running either left or right (depending on tides)
blast a rig out on any of them and you will see it run,
so its not personal, maybe it works out your way

I'd like to see a report up by someone using this rig.

As an aside, some of you should tone it down a bit. There are ways of making a point without being so abrupt - a little bit of manners goes a long way.

as for the otter board, many years ago i seen this type of fishing on lakes in Donegal, in fact my grandfather used to use one, they were lethal for getting your baited hooks or flies right out to cover the lake. they were mainly used to get brown trout. the otter board was so effective that it was banned outright by all fisheries, years ago it was nicknamed a poacher's best friend.
i have seen these otter boards in action many times GF, but not to sure if it would work in the sea with strong currents and surf to contend with, as the otter board was used for still waters. but fair play to you for thinking about trying it out in the sea, if it dose stick up a post of the session.
as ole rab c said " see me' see the sea' i love the sea me"
right i'am off for a swally!!!!!!! so were's the F***'n purse!!!!!!!
