Stubbie the Thornback Ray

#1 Post by last cast lad »

People:me & mick

Duration:7.30-11.30

Tide:rising to high

Weather: warm breeze, calm water

Bait:mackeral, squid, herring

Rigs:pulley, flapper, up&over

Results: stubbie the 4lb thornback ray

Report: Ok so this may sound a bit like the title to a childrens storybook, so here goes!
One day allister and mick decided to go fishing, now they always had a theory that fahan was a low tide mark as it seemed to help concentrate the fish in the channel. But to it has been said that to prove a theory you need to experiment by doing the opposite :? so they arrived on the beach a few hours after low tide just as about 8 other fishermen were begining to pack up. But allister and mick are very determined possible even stubborn some mind say so they tackled up and got some bait in the water. After quite a long time of nothing but a little sea weed mick noticed a very sudden slack line bite and quickly struck in hoping to catch a monster of the deep and when he finally brought the leviathon to the shore it was our friend stubbie the thornback ray :D Now nobody really knows why stubbie has a short tail with the end section which normally has a few little fins missing. Some people think that perhaps thats just the way he was born, some think that it was bitten off, but it would take a very silly fish to try bitting a thornback tail!, and some think that perhaps he was a silly thornback and tried to whip a big bad monster with his little tail and lost it in the battle. But whatever happened stubbie now has a short tail and is everybodies friend :D

I had this one from a mark down here, and I know that Ross has had a similar ray

The explaination I have been given is that the netters cant sell them and the easiest way to get the tails out of the nets is to cut them off.
The Truth is often stumbled upon by men, most of whom pick themselves up and hurry along as if nothing ever happened.
