wrasse return to Co. Down sun 5th april

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: me jordan and minty

Duration: 3.30pm - 8.30pm

Tide: low to high

Weather: excellent to begin with then it got hairy

Bait: rag, lug, mack, sand eel and lures

Rigs: too many to remember

Results: ME- blank MINTY- blank JORDAN- 1 male corkwing wrasse, 1 short spined sea scorpion and a 32cm ballen wrasse

Report: we went to a secret rock mark that another angler put us onto after i blanked at the other 3 marks last week. it was a bit hard to find, but we made it at the end. it was a cracker of a day with the sun shining and a calm sea :D . so things looked up for a change. i was on a bit of a mission as i had been blanking all week at the other marks out that way people had put me on to    so we got set up with minty and jordan spinning with lures and i fished a float with rag in a wee gully that was 15ft deep at low tide. the mark was a cracker spot, but it's still early in the year to get too excited so we carried on regardless all the same. jordan and minty had about 20 casts each before both lures were lost to the kelp   . but it's only to be expected when spinning at low tide over kelp beds   . so i gave jordan the float set up and i began spinning with minty. 20mins or so later minty lost another spinner and set up a float rig. as he was rigging up i heard an almighty commotion from where jordan was at and he came bouncing over the rocks with a 32cm ballen wrasse in his hands   . i thought " thank god " to myself, he's got a counter :P :P . once he calmed down it was photographed, marked on his card and returned to the sea none the worse. now minty and jordan were fishing the wee gully and i carried on spinning(or should i say loosing tackle). i did'nt care what happened from there on as jordan was beaming from ear to ear at getting a fish. and it was his first wrasse of the year to boot. but then that soon changed as a whoop and hollar signalled he got another fish. this time it was a male corkwing wrasse :D :D . just 2cms short of being a counter, but he did'nt care as it was another first for 2009   . he then proceeded to get another fish, a wee short spined sea scorpion. i think at this stage he was rubbing it in at our lack of fish and showing the 2 adults how it's done     i was a bit gutted that minty did'nt get a wrasse as he's never got one before, but that's fishing for ya. by 8.30pm there was a scary swell and the tempreature had fallen through the floor. so we admitted defeat and packed away. me and minty might have went home fishless, but i was just chuffed to bits that jordan had a good day :D :D

well done to Jordan. I was round the cost from you a bit at Killard point and i was beginning to think there was no fish at all in the area.

Definately got hairy towards the end. though it could have been worse we could have been fishing today.

cheers lads, jordan's still beaming from ear to ear at landing some wrasse so early in the year. i was just relieved he got one on the scorecard. to be honest i was'nt holding out much hope as i spent 3 days out that way last week on 4 different marks with 3 rods for 30+ hours and not so much as a nibble     . then jordan arrives for 5 hours and gets 3 fish

thanks lads. i bought him a spinning rod when he was 6 and we've not looked back since :D :D :D now we spend every available moment by the sea. when we're not fishing, we're collecting our own bait or scouting out marks with the dog   we both have it in our blood now and it's a real addiction      what's better than that, is that we're not just father and son. we're fishing buddies, and spend hours talking the ears off each other when we're out fishing. pure quality 8) 8) 8) 8) . you could'nt put a price on some of the memories that our fishing trips have given us over the last 3 years.

rab01 wrote:Well done Jordan. Has to be one of my favourite marks, I've had some stonking wrasse and pollock from there.
thanks lads, that mark is supposed to produce some massive pollock during the summer. it also looks like prime territory for wrasse, doggies and even conger. if you look at the second pic you'll see how high the high water line is on the rocks 20 foot above where we were fishing     . and considering it was a furthur 20 foot to the sea bed from where we were, thats gotta make a good spring tide 40+ foot deep at that spot   . and the kelp is gonna provide good hunting grounds for anything predatory. all i can say is roll on summer :D :D :D :D :D :D i don't mind loosing masses of tackle if it produces the odd monster
Tony Fella wrote:Never seen a corkwing wrasse before there deadly fair play to yas
cheers tony, that's why we try to get half decent pic's of what we catch to post on our reports. ok it's no monster, but it is a good clear example of a male corkwing wrasse. and if that helps someone else to i.d. one when they get one for the first time, as far as i'm conserned, that's us putting a bit back into a site that has helped us along the way
