West Waterford, Cortaz's Secret Spot

#1 Post by somedose »

People:
Myself, James Barry, 2 friends and a brief appearance by Cortaz himself
Duration:
2pm until half 4
Tide:
Low at 3
Weather:
Windy, wet
Bait:
Lugs, crabs, razorfish
Rigs:
Pennel, one-up, one down flappers and clipped and 2 hook flappers
Results:
1 bass

Report:

Arrived at the mark (still don't know where it was) and eventually got fishing. After about an hour a seal appeared just off shore (we thought it would ruin our chances). However, about 20 minutes later, I got a slack line bite with my back turned to the rod. Picked it up and struck and thought I'd missed it but was then met by the rod tip slamming over. After a fight of about 2 minutes, James grabbed the leader in the surf and dragged in my first ever bass (after nearly 6 years of sea angling!). Tipped the scales at 9 and a half pounds - delighted :D Didn't catch anything for the rest of the day (we even moved venue). Delighted to be rid of my bass virginity - and what a way to break it (also as uch as it killed me, I let the fish back to fight another day)

fair play to u on returning the fish. this is important especially when it is a secret location =as u called it.these locations get fished out very easily if anglers take the bass.the likes of that fish swim alone and he will come to this mark every year ,and spawn for many more years and its off spring may inturn inhabit the area.would u like to bring your son here in 10/15 years time to catch bass?? how brilliant would that be- u have increased the chance of that happening by hundreds of percent by returning that one..yes just one large fish. eat the 2/3 ib fish . they taste better. 2 a day per rod.

I know what that virginity is like  Well done on such a cracker of a fish. And the C&R! I can only guess but I'd say catching a fish like that tastes way better then eating it.

A big well done you will have the memory of that cracking first fish for ever. :D :D
Eating it would only have lasted minutes. As skipper says keep the odd small one if you have to keep any at all.

Cheers for all the comments lads - much appreciated

It certainly was something I'll never forget. When I was playing the fish I remember thinking "These 3lb fish fight hard!". It wasn't until I saw the size of his head that I knew it was a big 'un

Asregards the C&R, it's something I've being doing alot this year. I know people do it most of the time for bass but it is also important to remember to release other threatened fish ESPECIALLY cod (you don't see people angry or complaining when people post pictures of large dead cod, yet if it was a large dead bass.............)
