why pay a few thousand euro for a boat when a pack of polo and a bag of balloons only costs about 2 euro

part of the fun in fishing for me is trying new rigs and experimenting with different methods of fishing
some people might think i am mad but they probably thought that the fellow who invented the clip down rig was mad too

You have to be commended for "thinking outside of the box".
For those of us who can't cast 250m and dont have a boat it is a concept worth considering and shouldn't be jokingly dismissed out of hand.
I can think of a few marks in Cork Harbour for example where (if the currents and winds were right) your polo mint/ballon rig might enable access to deeper channels or sand banks which are well beyond my casting capabilities.

I can see that it also would have potential where casting is restricted by trees close to the shore line, steep cliffs etc.

Best of luck with you new idea.

this rig will definatly be of benefit when you need to get a big bait out at distance.
a full mackerel with the wire trace and 6ft of heavy mono plus a heavy lead. good idea mate.

how far can this yoke actually go, and how long does it take to get there?. seems like a lot of fuss for f-all result, seriously man spend the time and effort, learn to develop a reasonable cast ,hitting reasonble distances and you will rarley blank. i mean ive fished a lot of marks in galway, theres almost always fish in close on most venues. perhaps your rigs, bait presentation and technique should always be addressed. if ideas like these are a means to avoiding a blank thats the best advice i can give

dont know how far it will go have only tried it twice it all depends on wind and tides, only in the process of testing it at the moment
tried different bait presentation and rigs but not getting any bites the last time i was out all bait came back untouched

one good thing about having a lot of blanks when fishing gives me more time to build different rigs when i am sitting waiting for the tip of the rod to bend,i always carry a small box of rig making stuff with me
fishing and experimentation is some thing i like to do

dont know if my casting is good, what distance would be a good cast with a Fixed Spool reel and a multiplier reel

theres my problem with it there, its tide dependent in most cases. the tide wont necessarily being moving in a perpendicular angle to the beach, so who says youl get good distance with it.

a good cast with bait is about 100 to 120 yards, most people think they can cast that no problem, but when they actually see it measured out it shocks them. but with a little technique its easily attainable.

i guess if you enjoy experimenting, then power to you

I think that was the whole point of the thread but some who got lost in translation. I for one enjoyed reading about the experiment and fair play to GFK for trying it out.

I must say fair play to GFK to a good idea, i also have enjoyed reading this tread since it came up. Sure it sounds mad but something fun to do. Fishing is our hobby something that keeps us out of trouble and sane (even if we do get called insane due to fishing in some weather     I for one have always try to come up with very strange idea's most of us make our own rigs and always try something never tried before so why not. I hope it works i also wanted to try and make a weight out of a golf ball and hit it with a driver to get out never tried it was and still is in my head one day if you see a fellow on a beach with a fishing rod and a golf club that be me. who doesn't try things outside the box? I for one will be trying this some day when i get fishing in the daylight. well best of luck with the idea and also the idea that you have under wraps hope that works and you fill us all in on it as this one has a lot of people intrested in it. I'm all for new ideas if they work or not.

the rig is off the wall i can think of a few places id like to try it. to see how it goes, a bit of crac if nothing else as regards casting id like people try 120 yards with a full mackrel. i was thinking of a ballon rig and the shooting the ballon with an air gun but id probably end up in mount joy!

tried the balloon rig again on Sunday, had no polo mints, ate them all  but just tried the balloon with half a mackerel on it to see how far it would go.got it out 250 meters/820 feet, cleaned the reel of line, had a good strong wind behind me

DSC04234.jpg

the balloon is the green dot under the arrow in the photo

going to try a boat rod and reel with a full mackerel the next day there is a good wind in the right direction to see what distance i get, hope a shark hooks up as well :D

would love to hear of any ideas for a shark rig ,thanks
