I photographed a seal chasing and catching a salmon about 6lb at work a couple of months ago ,it chased it for about 100m along the river bank before catching it in a reed bed ,pretty inpressive turn of speed for something so fat

using a canon 30d and a sigma (slighty modified) 400mm lens ,had to take the photos free hand so they're not as sharp as I'd like, also having a moving boat didn't help

well pleased with the results though .

I have yet to get a tele lens for the nikon yet, I am still playing about with one I got with it.

I am raging too, I lost my memory card and it has all my boy's christening photo's on it

Just had a wee look through your album there ronald, nice selection of pictures mate and really good quality,

The colours of the duck really came through in one the pictures, really good close up. Did you use a tele lens for it?

ok, im shooting with a 300mm lens now(well, its a 150 olympus) and i am thinking of getting a 600mm but i dont know if i can justifiy all that money an a new lens that i wont use much. really nice pics though. and i agree with ya on the seal, they may be fat but thay cant half move when they need to

Awesome pics there ronald. Was this the Lagan also? I pass the lagan every day, and often wonder there has to be marine life in there. However when the tides out and your passing over the Albert Bridge in the car or bus and ya smell those mud flaps I have doubts

See the herron working up and down the banks, nice to see in the centre of town.

To bring it back a bit, Davy in prep for this season, the hooks you mentioned (size 6 owner pint hook) can I get these locally ok? With these hooks and a fluffy piece of bread is that enough to keep afloat or is a floating line required?

I've a 18-200mm lens I used for that one ,also a loaf of bread came in handy

suppose we'd better get back on topic or we'll get shouted at

the Owner pint hooks can be got from veals ,I dont think any of the local shops do them

ok, back on topic, i saw some neat hooks that coarse anglers use for keeping paste on the hook for longer and thought it would work well with bread for mullet. so i just made this to show ye lads what i mean, took 30 seconds with a soldering iron and a spring from a pen. and of course the size 6 owner pint hook

. it should work fairly well. it still needs refining, its quite heavy with all that solder on the hook. let me know what ye all think.

nice one ,what about a drop of 2 pack epoxy instead of solder ,not sure if heating the eye of the hook with a soldering iron would weaken it in any way ,maybe hardening the hook and making it brittle .

looks good alex.you just have to get the mullet to feed on paste(that might be the hardest part) maybe a fish based paste would get them interested

the idea was more for the bread to have a better hold on the hook than it would on a normal hook. however, a fish paste is a good idea, ill have to try that when the weather warms up a bit.

i didn't think of the weakening ronald, ill have to test that. the 2 stage epoxy would be lighter too! good idea.

some people use it for bread when coarse fishing for carp and big roach.
