Report:
We arrived at the first mark with high hopes of seeing alot of fish but we were very disapointed
When we arrived the tide was still pushing in and there was good numbers of fish, but there was a lot of scum on the surface making fishing impossible. Then two kayakers ploughed through the fish and they dissapeared until the tide started to drop. The light was really starting to go by now and we only had about 30 mins of fishing where we could actually see what we were doing.
The mullet were gathering in big numbers infront of us and it was frantic fishing.Colin and i were using the fly rods and we both had around 5 hits in 5 mins, while Ronald was using bait and had two missed bites.I hooked the first fish and had it on for 5 mins before it came off
Everyone was using fly rods now and i had moved downstream to follow a big group of fish.First cast after my short move and i was hit again, this time i really pulled hard to make sure the hook was set and it was. There was just enough light to see what the fish was doing but not enough to see what sort of size it was but i knew it was big.It took several good runs upstream of about 60 foot. This was the best fight i`ve ever had from any mullet but im not sure how long it lasted,i think it was around 15 mins, maybe more.By the time i got it to the net it was virtually pitch black and as i lifted the fish onto the bank i nearly crapped cos it looked about 7lb.I ran down to Ronald and Colin for photos and weighing. It was a long fish(58cm) but very lean(31cm) and weighed in at 5.35lb
They fished on for another 10 mins but it was too dark and there were no more fish after that.Unfortuneatly the tides are too late the rest of the week so we wont get out until saturday for another crack at them.
A certain forum member called me a lucky angler(he didn`t use those exact words but this is a family site so i cant the words he used) but im not so sure, over the past seven days i haven`t blanked once and its been the best mullet fishing i`ve had with eleven mullet, three of them on the fly rod.great stuff
