Bait: me - razor, Pete - crab, mack, sandeel, razor......

Rigs: 2hook flappers, 3 hook flappers, 1 hook pulley

Results: me - 1 GH Bream , 1 coalie Pete - plenty of coalies

Catch and Release:: GH came home for taste test



Report: Got the call from Pete, who having been waylaid in his house for a while required some fishing therapy. Got down there 20 minutes after Pete, who landed a coalie as I was tackling up.

Conditions were good and we thought a few fish would be on the cards.
I cast out two rods, the second one was a slight miscast and landed closer than I intended, but I left it out there. Went off to chat to Pete and after a couple of minutes my rod started nodding. I ran back over and started reeling in, good tug back on the line - Bass I thought. When I had it close, thought I had it foul hooked as it was more humped breaking the water than I would have suspected. Great feeling when I realised it was a gilt head bream - wasn't really expecting it. Dropped off the hook just as I got out of the water, but it was safely retrieved.

Pete was galvanised into action, rebaiting and casting, but only a few coalies for his effort. Not impressed that my miscast had landed a gilt head I think

I managed another small coalie and then the fishing seemed to go off about 11ish, so after a bit of a chat we headed off to our respective homes.

Delighted with latest addition to my species list. Hopefully Pete will add any relevant info and post up the pic he took of the GH and me...

Gilt head are really tasty.
Try it steamed then make up a sweet and sour sauce, 3 table spoons of light soy sauce, 1 table spoon of Chinese black vinegar or cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Mix that lot up and chop some scallion finely and pour it over the top of the fish and serve with rice. Deadly.

Well done Lee, after the hours I've put in on this beach and never seen sight nor sound of a gilthead (although we did find a Rays bream washed up here once) I'm not a bit impressed you pulled one out on a gammy cast.... Fair play however, I'll just have to keep plugging away. I had 4 or 5 "lovely" coalies, Joy.... Conditions after the stormy weather at the weekend looked good but no bass showed which was surprising. Wouldn't have minded being there a little earlier but sure circumstances dictated otherwise. Heartening to see these foreign visitors on a local beach all the same. Nice one. Below is a pic, quality a bit rubbish as taken with the phone but you get the general idea.

It'll work with any fish, but Bream is one of the tastiest fish out there

It's a Ken Hom recipe I have in a book at home, Beijing style sweet and sour sauce.

Put the sauce in a bowl to the side with a spoon in and pour over as needed, it is a powerful sauce. It's also worth getting the proper vinegar for but cider vinegar is pretty good in it too.

Well Eoin, wife went with a Jamie Oliver recipe for bream with a thai sauce, but you were right she thought it was a lovely fish. Still half of it left, so might give your recipe a try for the other fillet. (it was 2lb gave or take a ounce)
