I'm going to try this rig out for tope from the shore . Just wondering if anybody has ever used it or has any advice . It involves just casting you lead locking up and sliding your baited trace down the line . They advise using hollow Dacron as a leader so it is knot free . Can you get this in Irish shops or is it a online job . Any advice opinions welcome . http://nutshelltravel.com/NutShell%20Fi ... mplate.htm

It is very fancy and all that but what do you hope to achieve with it?? Have I missed something? Personally I dont like pennels for tope, the second hook is a nuisance and can rip the fish to bits which isnt desirable for a catch and release species.

Sorry link must be wrong . I only use one hook stitched throw my baits . It was the method of sliding baited snood down the line Instead of casting it . You just have to cast lead which means further distance .

have you tried a pulley rig with a wire trace snood to stop getting bit off?????

Widely used in South Africa for getting a big bait out for the toothy critters slides are not widely available in Europe but you can find them here - http://www.sharnbrooktackle.com/acatalo ... es_46.html
have a couple but not used them yet, going to be trying them out for skate from the shore.

was watchin matt hayes new program and they used this to fish for BIG fish with whole 2 and 3 lb dead baits the slider can only go one way (out) you shake the rod to keep the bait moving out in the surf ,i must admitt after seeing it used its a brilliant gizmo in theory you could get a big bait out as far as you can cast a 5 or 6oz gripper
now thats alot futher than i can cast 6oz and a whole mac

seen this setup on a few shows myself . means you can get away with using casts to get distance that would normally vapourise a bait .

I've used this method a number of times in South Africa and have been meaning to give it a go myself in Ireland. There is no question about it, you will put a large bait much further with this method.... SIMPLE
The method itself takes some practice to slide the bait out but with practice you should be able to put a bait as far as you can cast....
With that comes the problems... In South Africa and Mozambique the tide flows on the shores are almost nil. There are small fluctuations in HW and LW so there is a significant reduction of drag on the lead. Even with this the guys use 8oz and 9oz leads to slide the bait out. Given they are sliding whole Bonito or even bigger baits, but I have seen 9oz used for sliding whole Mackerel in a heavy surf.
I think in Ireland you will need to use fixed grip leads or try to get a hold of some 8oz or 9oz grip leads... at the very least 7oz fixed grip leads would be the minimum to try this method. Even then, don't be surprised if the lead is moving on you. Try it during neap tides and go from there. Make sure there is no weed as it will also trip and move the lead. For Tope use the sliding clip with the weight as this will help greatly when sliding the bait out, especially with a lighter half Mackerel bait. Make sure you use a 8/0 short shank style hook minimum to help keep dogs from hooking themselves up and ruining all your hard work.
Let us know how you get on! and any more questions, fire away.

i tried this a few months back on a wicklow beach, just using a large split ring and a small weight to bring the mackeral out.
it didnt work too well after all my shaking of the rod, the bait wasnt too far from shore, because when i brought it in it was full of weed.
the problem was that the bait was too heavy and the line just bent into the water and rested on the sea bed.
its a great idea in theory, maybe the beach was too shallow, i dont know, but i will try again

Try using the balloon trace for shark put attach the balloon to a polo mint it goes out with wind or tide the polo melts and the bait drops cant find the exact article at the moment

polo mint and balloon rig for getting extra distance
this is a rig I tried out and it worked well
what you need
any rig you like to use
run main line free trough a swivel and the centre of the polo mint then tie some line around one side of the polo mint and on to the clip swivel then on the other side of the polo mint tie the balloon and then tie the balloon to the other swivel
set up like in the photo
how to use
cast out with the wind at your back or with the tide going out from you
if conditions are right it will go out further then you can cast
how it works
the balloon will keep your rig a float for about 10 or 15 min's until the polo mint dissolves and then it will drop your rig and bait to the bottom
if you try it out let me know how you get on
