heading to wicklow next week

#1 Post by Donagh »

I'm heading up to Wicklow on Thursday of next week to stay for a few days. I hope to do a bit of fishing. I don't want to drive to far from the town so I was thinking about heading out to Enereilly the Thursday for the spring high tide at 9pm. Should I try else where or later in the week?

Ennereilly is very hit and miss, i'd try the south beach in Arklow. It always has numbers of fish and enough to keep the rod busy.

Also, give either pier a try. Loads of fish in daylight, not big, but enough to keep you entertained.
My mate had a decent thornie off the big pier, 7-8lb.
The following were caught there when I was there last week :

Codling
Whiting
Dabs
Thornback Ray
Pout
Mackerel
Rock fish
Wrasse
Pollack

I tend to fish as it gets dark as its packed with kids and the mackerel bashers in daylight . . . . not great if you want a quiet nights fishing.

From my limited experience of Arklow beach (about 15 outings) its mainly small stuff until dark. I have had lots of bigger fish after dark mainly dogs with some small smoothies. I generally only go back when I am struggling some where else. I would try one of the beaches past Arklow after dark. I hope to be down that way on Tuesday and will put a post on as usual if I am.
