Fixed Spool vs Multiplier Rod rings

#1 Post by Esox lunatic »

Does the design of rings on a beachcaster (i.e. rings on a rod designed for use with a multiplier vs those on a rod for used with a fixed-spool reel) really have a great bearing on performance?

I know that the bottom rings on a rod for use with fixed spool reels are much larger to facilitate line paid out from a spool through a revolving bail arm, but can a fixed-spool reel be used succesfully on a rod designed for using a multiplier and vice versa?

I have a a very handy four-section beach rod (Penn Jetstream), which has rings for use with a multiplier (Penn Mag 525) and it performs very well (it would perform much better if I could improve my casting!).

I wonder if the rod could be used successfully with a large fixed spool surf reel? I also have a 14ft surf rod which is designed for fixed spool use. Can this be used with the Penn 525?

Some days I prefer just to takle the one rod and being able to switch reels would be handy.

The problem with the multiplier-rung rods when used with (especially a wide drum) fixed spool reel is that as the line comes off the reel in coils, it can wrap around the first eye leading to the inevitable crack-off. Using the multiplier with a fixed spool-rung rod, you won't get this problem at least.

in most cases you can get away with using one on the other and vice versa with no problems
