Rogerstown Estuary 14.09.2020

#1 Post by Gonzo »

When: 14/09/2020
Where: Rogerstown Estuary (Rush side) (Again)
Who: Yours truly
Duration: 16:00-21:00
High Water: 21:54
Equipment: 15ft beachcaster with 9000 reel & 11ft bass rod with 4000 reel, bite detection bells.
Bait/Lures: Peeler crab & ragworm with 4/0 offset bait holder hooks & 3/0 circle hooks, ledgered on the 15ft rod and flapper on the other rod.
Conditions: Overcast and a bit chilly.
Result: 1 surprise mackerel

Really trying my best for a bass here, got down to Rogerstown at 3pm for low tide to collect my bait for the day, I ended up with about 20 peeler and 25 king ragworm in an hour or so of gathering. Afterwards I went straight to the mouth on the Rush side and got set up. Wasn't long before I had a nice bite, around the same time of the tide as I was getting the bites yesterday, and still the same problem with losing the fish, a few times I could feel the fish on and then next thing it was snagged, lost 2 rigs to this happening, fish must have been wrapping my line around an old mooring or something! At one stage I just threw on a peeler with legs still on, only the top shell removed and no bait elastic to give some movement with the legs, it came off in the cast and as I was reeling in the bare hook I picked up a nice sized mackerel to my surprise!

It's funny that I spent all that time collecting bait and putting it on my hooks and the only thing I managed to catch was on a bare hook
