Caherciveen Report

#1 Post by therealrocketeer »

Venue: Caherciveen, Reenard Point

Bait: Rag, Mackerel, Sandeel, Frozen Peeler, Lures

Tide: All tide states

Results: wrasse, pollack, bull huss

Headed down to Kerry with one of my mates Wednesday evening after work and landed into Caherciveen around 11. Went down to Reenard for the last couple of hours of ebb and managed a few nice bull huss on mackerel. Had a conger rod out but no joy. Packed up when it started flooding and the LSDs moved in.

After a few hours of sleep we were back up for high tide and targeted the wrasse. We made our way over to the north of Caherciveen and found a few rock marks that looked perfect for some nice wrasse and pollack fishing. Sea state was slight so we set up the floats with rag and crab and had action straight away. Bites kept coming until slack when it died off. It was interesting to see the movement of fish from one side of a point we were fishing to the other going with the direction of the wind.

We packed up went exploring for new marks for pollack before the flood. After a sketchy bit of rock hopping we found a likely spot and threw half the lure box at them with the savage gear sandeel being the only one to produce. With the light fading we headed back to reenard for another go at the huss with similar results but the weather had taken a turn and found out my waterproofs need re-waterproofing!

The next morning saw us trying for the wrasse again with the hope of spotting some triggers but the weather had made for difficult fishing on the rock marks and next to impossible to spot any triggerfish that might be about. We managed to get a few more wrasse up to 3lb 10oz and my mate landed a cracking pollack to finish the day off.

All in all a great couple of days fishing and in an unbelievable setting! No specimen wrasse but theres always next time.
