New Rod Stuck Together....

#1 Post by Teegerstk »

Don't laugh...
Received my new rod today, a Penn Squadron 15ft rod. I unpacked it and put it together to size it up, very happy with it but when I collapsed it down, only the tip section came off. The butt and mid section were firmly locked in, no matter how hard I twisted or pulled. I tried the frozen bag of peas method to cool down the male section of the rod, still stuck.
Any advice on how to detach the pieces?

Absolutely livid... :x

light spray of wd40 above the joint, leave a few minutes to seep down in, wipe off carefully
two people, one take one section (not gripping the rings), firm grip on the actual rod itself, twist clockwise
Other person on other section (again not rings), firm grip again, twist anticlockwise, and slowly ease them apart
probably a bit of grit...

get an old car tube cut two long strips about an inch wide.spiral one around each section tape down the edges.then twist the opposite way this will give you more grip and leverage.if they come apart use 3 in one spray with silicone from Halfords.this is what century advise on tight spigots.hope this helps.
common sense not very common

Sounds like you've done this before

Would I be right in saying that using each method on each section would work?
Ice on the male section, shrinks it, warmth on the female section expands ( ) it?

I'll give this one ago, don't have WD40 on me atm!
Thanks lads!

Good luck with that teegerstk. I hope you get sorted. I had that problem a few years ago with a new 12 foot ABU Viper beach rod and it didn't end well...

I didn't think the sections had fitted together as snugly as I would have liked so I put a drop of oil in before bringing it out to Dun Laoghaire to try it out. I ended up with the two sections practically welded together - couldn't budge them. And if that wasn't bad enough I had managed to twist it before it locked so the rings on the two sections were practically opposite one another - I couldn't even use it! I had to drive home with it sticking out the drivers window like a medieval lance.

I tried everything, heating it, cooling it - no luck. I eventually brought it back to the shop - they tried all the usual stuff to no avail. I ended getting a new rod at a good discount so it worked out sort of OK in the end.

And then to add insult to injury I was in the same shop a couple of years later with a buddy of mine who was buying the same rod only for the fella behind the counter to start telling the story about me and my rod!

My situation is the exact same as yours - rings are facing the wrong way, wasn't sure if it was in far enough! Really p##sed off atm! The people I bought it off were sound enough - I was going for the 14ft rod at €100 but it wasn't in stock so they offered me the 15ft at €110 instead of the usual €125 because of the inconvenience - I had ordered online and got the call a day later. I think they'll sort me out with a replacement, I've retained the packaging.

Thanks, it worked! A lot of swearing preceded it but eventually the rod came apart! Nearly went flying backwards when it released!
I'm afraid to put it back together again, is there anyway I can "lube" it up to make it easier to break it down when done?

Thanks, I've heard of people using a pencil to loosen it up, is this worth a shot too?

Yes that sound's like a better idea TBH, the lead in a pencil is graphite
