[BEGINNER] Pier fishing in Ballyhack/Arthurstown?Equipment e

Hey all,
I'm completely new to fishing; I just made my account on this forum.I have read the rules and I'll stay in the good books

So, I live near Ramsgrange in Wexford.I've read some posts about fishing at Ballyhack and Arthurstown, I'm interested in starting it up.Me father and I went fishing down near slade a few years ago and caught nothin', but we had great craic.

What can I catch down in this area?Crabs, eels...what else?What gear do I need?

Sorry for the inexperience, I hope I'm tolerable!

Welcome aboard.

I won't advise on bait -the Wexicans can do that!

But I might ask do you have any rods and reels at the moment. Some coarse/pike gear can be suitable for pier fishing if you don't need to chuck huge leads.

I am relatively new to fishing myself -I only started about 4 years ago. In my experience, just get enough gear to just get you going, and don't spend a fortune either. As you get more into it, you will focus on the type of fishing you enjoy most, and you might invest in better gear.

Once your post count is up , you will have access to the for sale section here which I have found to be a great way of picking up second hand gear. Keep an eye on adverts.ie also -you get the odd bargain popping up there too.

a 12 ft rod with 15lb main line and 60lb shock leader some 150g leads a good light for bait crab and frozen mackerel and lug thats what my mate uses all the time fish i hook up and one down also fishing the coming tide at night seems to be the best

Arthurstown tends to fish best into the rough ground to the south of the pier so expect to lose some leads. Check out how to use weak links to minimise tackle losses. The good news is that you don't have to cast very far to get into the fish. But the ground (from memory) is very weedy and rough. You might also start with only one or at most two hooks per rig, to reduce the snagging. Also the place is alive with crabs, so learn how to cover your baits with squid!

Good advice already given.
I'm not much of a bait angler myself, preferring lure fishing, but Id fish both piers during the winter months. This time of year expect to catch cod, whiting and dabs with the odd flounder thrown in too.
Id usually use crab baits or mackerel and have good success.
There are usually a few anglers fishing there this time of year. Go down and have a chat with them and seek their advice, they were all beginners at some stage and most are quite happy to help newcomers.

Thanks lads, sorry I haven't replied, been very busy lately.I appreciate all the advice, I went for a walk down there and the kind locals gave me some advice: sand eels, lug, rag and mackerels for bait.I'm heading down there tomorrow, wish me luck!

Would ya fish well in the day time?I've been down there twice, once at noon and the other in the dark, caught my first codling in the dark.
It's a nice place and I know what bait to use I just don't know what time to go at.Thanks for the reply

Yeah I've had codling and whiting from Arthurstown, small enough! Other marks in my area have produced better fish, although a bait supplier told me a 12lb bass was caught there... lies upon lies

I was just looking back on my old posts..I didn't have a CLUE about fishing then... I thought a crab would be a good catch
So cringey...
