Multiplier reel maintenance

After every fishing I rinse my reel with fresh water to avoid future problems but I don't know how often am i supposed to oil it to keep the reel in good condition. How often do you do it ? Do you look after your reel yourself or give it to a professional service? Thanks for any advice.

Rinsing is fine but it will not get into all the parts especially if the reel fall in to the water.

Two factors here, number 1 the quality of the reel and number 2 how often do you use/abuse it.

For multiplier reels I use the Penn 525 (made in the USA ) and would class it as one of the bullet proof reels along with the Daiwa 7HT's and Abu's 6500 range. The cheaper reels a fine for the "once a month angler" but once you hit lumps of weed these reels will grind to a halt.

For fixed spools the Shimano's are streets ahead of the rest. I have an Penn Affinity 8000 and Penn Surfblaster 8000 , both fine reels, but and I can see where they are going top give me a problem as they get more use/abuse.
From now until March I'll be doing the most of my shore fishing so once a month I'll strip down the multipliers to the shell and clean/oil all the moving parts replacing bearings if needed.
I've only started on fixed spool reels since the start of the year so its a wash and polish job with these at the moment.

For my fishing reels they get a rise down after each session and a full strip down once a year or any time they get a dunk in the sea or sand. Like Donal said the penn 525( I have the USA one too) is bombproof, have mine about 9years I think and it's been given a full service once and still runs brilliantly
