Chasing Mullet

Hi all,

A species I've never targeted before is mullet. With the ban coming up a goal of mine is to go after them while I can't target bass.

Couple of questions for the mullet afficionados among you

Will my bass lure rod do? I know fellas who do coarse fishing would have a dedicated float rod.

I think I might have an old floppy 10ft spinning rod in the shed maybe it might be better.

If I'm using braid would I want to go to a longer flouro leader than normal? I hear they are very finicky feeders. I have 7lb flouro maybe that's a bit heavy.

By all accounts using ground bait of mashed up bread in an onion bag seems to be a good method with a piece of bread as a hook bait. What size hooks do I need ?

Lastly, I'd love to know a couple of spots in the Cork area to get me going. PMs welcome.

Have a look around Aghada pier and pontoon. When they do start to gather in numbers you will find them all the way up to Rostellan lake.
Try tying a good size bag of bread off the outer leg of the pontoon at the pier. Best to do it the evening before to get the fish into the area.

Donal Aghada is handy enough for me so I could nip down after work a couple of evenings to "get the feed going" as the coarse anglers call it!

your bass rod will do grand, or any rod with a bit of play in it, braid is ok but i prefer mono braid unforgiving sometimes you can pull alot of hooks with it .i think mono in 3lb to 6lb best as Donal says aghada upto rostellan good for them but to be honest every part of harbour has its own resident mulllet.as for ground baiting its not necessary in most places especially if a lot of duck swans in area, patience is the key keep low and quiet helps avoiding spooking the fish, other times it doesnt matter they will swim around your feet .Just my two pence worth good luck very addictive fishing on right tackle the fight off a mullet will beat most fish from our shores.as for bait brennans bread is best, they willl also happily take maddies(harbour rag) in certain areas and spinning methods work also

Cheers peakle. Today's bread today ! Aghada /Rostellan looks like a bit of craic.

Down in timoleague too looks a good spot- by the first bridge into the village from bandon direction there is a little pontoon looks perfect
