prawn shrimp traps

Was working in bantry the other day and git my self said trap it only cost 15 euro didn't break the bank just wondering has any one used one from the shore any tips info would be great

Down the wall of breakwaters harbour walls places likethat attach a rope to it place bait inside mackeral fillet fish guts eg through it out let it sink tye other end rope to something leave trap about half hour pull trap up check inside prawns shrimp crab all possable I use one in cork and I get loudly 2 ta 3 inch prawns for bait

tie the bait onto the bottom of the trap and watch for congers trying to steal the whole thing... every 15 mins rather than 30 may be a safer option.

somebody on here mentioned a possible good idea that i recall..

i have one of these traps myself and have had great fun catching sea scorpions, butter fish, crabs, eels etc etc in it when the trap was fished on the bottom. but to maybe try and avoid all these species, if you want to target shrimp only, then an idea would be not to let the trap down the whole way down to the bottom - stop a few feet from the bottom of the harbour wall for example. this will hopefully just mean shrimp being caught... ?

think that you need to make sure to find a good 'shrimpy' place too. some big rock pools can be good?
yeah, i'd check it quite regularly if you are having imminent success

at night time in the warmer months if you use a landing net with a fine mess and a long handle you scrap up the side of a harbour wall or pier to collect some fine sized shrimp, when wearing a head torch on a low setting or one that the batteries are running low on, you will be able to see the eyes of the shrimp reflecting the light back to you from under the water, but this usually means your hanging over the edge so be careful

and as tigger said about some of the shrimps can be up to 3/4" in length.
