Darn weed....why me?

#1 Post by fishfeatures »

I was out fishing with a buddy on south facing beaches, the other night. My buddy forgot his rod rest so was using mine as we were only fishing one rod each. So we were fishing in the same spot all night.

Most of the night i was pulling in big stalks of weed, whilst my buddy wasn't. We moved 30 yards down the beach but i still had so much trouble, i ended up losing half my mainline and 3 traces. My buddy on the other hand pulled in 6 codling and a fews dogs and prob only once or twice got caught in some light weed.

Im frustrated as to why it was only me in the weed all the time, esp as my buddy is a bigger caster than me so surely he had to be pulling through it too or even landing in it.
We were using the same type rigs and same type weights too....
Only difference i can tell is the casting and his rod a foot longer.
There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore looking like an idiot

It sounds like the weed was all in close and your mate was casting over it and the longer rod was just enuff to keep him clear , maybe try moving the cups up on your rod rest up and fish at the highest part of the beach , it might help or might not lol.

Weed is an affliction for us all on occasion, looking forward to a session and bang first cast your line is covered with the stuff, as Paul said the weed was probably in close.

I'd agree with Paul. Try putting your rod as high in the rod rest as you can get away with.

Added, If you wade out to cast, reel back in the slack line and keep the tip of the rod as high as possible when you are wading back in. A lot of weed can be picked up on the slack line just after the cast.

I might not have happened in the above case but a lot of anglers pick up weed because they keep their rod rest too far back from the waters edge. The further back the rod is the nearer to the shore your lines enters the water. This is where a lot of the weed gathers.
