Best 'match rod '

#1 Post by Bimmer »

Okay Gents...and Ladies gonna throw this one out to the floor... I am expecting a 'varied response' ranging from ''what type of ground are you fishing etc etc etc.. HOWEVER.. Match Rods. What do you think is best, I was looking at a Zippy Profile Match, or maybe a Primo GT. This choice is purely based on thefact that I always fancied owning a Zziplex, but now with AFAW and Med type rods... I'm ' at sea' ( if you pardon the pun )...so ?

The continental stile rod seems to be the new craze on the match seen, long rods with soft tips , good for casting maddies long distance, trabucco seem very popular , great rods I reckon but other lads would disagree , I also hear good things about the yuki rods worth a look.

The profile match is very soft. The zziplex m4 high flex match has a beautiful glass tip that will show up a whiting fart but has plenty of power in the mid section to handle rays and hounds so that would be the one to get

Best match rod, well how long is a piece of string? Start with the reel, do you wish to use a fixed spool or multiplier?

The M4 is a great choice and will serve you well. I've used the Daiwa Tournament X family for the last 22 years or so and still use an AWT along with my main X. In truth, any top quality rod built for match angling will work. It's really down to what suits you. If you have some friends with a good selection then have a shot of them when on the beach. It's very hard to pick a rod off the rack. The usual shake in a tackle shop just doesn't cut it. You really need to have a cast and try them out. Maybe you could ask a shop to give you one for a day (having paid a full deposit obviously). Look after it, cast it on a field or beach. If you like it, keep it, if not, get another. I've done that in the past, though it obviously depends on the shop. Good luck in your search. A good rod will last you years.

Thanks for replies so far, I have a K2 Red Metal Twin Tip, Alcedo, Diawa RGM Z Surf so I covered for most types of ground. reel wise.. I'm on a Multi on Diawa and Fixed on other two. I have heard good things bout M4 ( Web Reports ) would like to have a wiggle or two with one. Primo Synchro ( soft ? ) I know it is as MC said ' how long is a piece of string '' but it is also a good idea to see what the best string may be..lol...

The primo synchro is not a match rod but a good all rounder my weapon of choice. you wont find them in a tackle shop most zziplex are made to order.
try make it to a sportscast Ireland meet and you can try out alot of zziplex models

Hi ya, the worlds your oyster :-) the best rod is the one best suited to do what u need it to do, match or not.

I have a good selection of both fixed spool and multi rods all top end models so we can arrange to meet up so u can see what u might like.

No promise that any rod you decide on will catch u more fish though, bait does that :-)

See you soon.

Zziplex really have the pedigree as regards match rods , the classic 2500 really started the ball rolling ! Not to sure about these new style rods like yuki and the like , they look like all show and no go lol , but any rod can cast a bait out and reel a fish in !

Hi Big Rod,
Not to sure about these new style rods like yuki and the like

Possibly because you have zero experience of them ? Things have moved on since the 2500 days, like ur shiny new minima rings :-)

Advice based on experience is far better than hearsay and suggestion, that's what has this place in the state it's in.

:-)

Your right k staff , just my 2 pence worth , from a guy that only knows about cod fishing , these new rods just look to flashy ,, do you sell these new style rods or just use them ? I am keen to find out more and you seem to be the guy to talk to on here ? No offender meant by my above statement , don't mean to step on toes !!

Toes intact so no issues there :-) All input is welcome of course but for the purpose of the posters original question I'm simply advising on rods I have and use and know something about.

2500 was a fine rod nonetheless.

Thanks for the offer Keith, I, ll take you up on that one. Funny.... somehow I knew prior to posting, that this particular topic could turn into a hot one' . I do appreciate all views on the subject so by all means keep them coming. Of course it is most definately a personal choice when it comes down to a 'favourite or ' best choice..... the fish don't care what throws it out, but what it' is, how it's presented, and IF they want it.
With such a wealth of anglers on the site it does make sense to see whats out there, who is using what, and what they consider goood, bad etc.

Just clean ground, the hsm is hard to beat. Lovely glass tip and handles any fish you will get from clean ground match fishing. I have an m4, and it wouldn't even get loaded in my car if I was going to a clean beach.

What is a match rod?
And what match is ever the same as the last?
I would bring two or three rods to most matches one scratching rod, a grauvell twin tip 15 foot and a multi rod that will go the distance at long range, there isn't one rod that will do it all!

True roger !!! If its called a match rod is it deemed to be a match rod ? Or is it just a generic name given to a stiff butt soft glass tip beachcaster to which there are many ?
