Gear recommendations for pier fishing on east coast

#1 Post by Schmintan »

First post, hi everyone!

After years away from freshwater course fishing I have an urge to get back to it foe some relaxation.
I want to be able to do a bit of float and bottom fishing from piers around the east (dublin, Wicklow area).

Problem is I'm not sure what gear (rod, reel, line and rig) will be good, but also not crazy expensive.
Type of fishing would be bottom or maybe float fishing, I'm not too particular on what species I'm looking for right now.

Some recommendations would really be appreciated.

Tanka all!

(FYI, I done a food bit of mall river spinning doe brown trout in my younger days, so am getting into bass fishing too, but an friend who is a very good bass fisherman has already steered me right for gear in that area)

A 12ft rated for 50-100g would be my shout. So a decent bass or pike/carp rod.

Match that with a 6000 reel and 15lb mainline.

Ideal for light ledgering and sea floats.

Thanks for the info. Anyone got any good rod & reel recommendations?

Il prob be in Henry's over the week but good to hear some input from people who may have actually used some good good gear. prefarably less than 125 for rod and same again or reel.

Shimano Baitrunner reels are about 70 euro.

I've heard the Penn Rampage Surf Bass Rod is excellent and around 115 euro.

If it's mainly float fishing you'll be doing then I'd personally go for a pike/carp rod, which would be nearly half that price.

Thanks.
I need something pretty versatile as i dont want to have separate rods for float fishing vs bottom fishing etc. plan is a beachcaster for variety & a spinning rod for dedicated lure/spinning.

Think i have some good info to go on at this point. Into Henry's tomorrow. thanks!
