1st Time Sea Fishing in Kells, Complete Noob

Hi Everyone.
I join this site a few years back but never got around to fishing until today. I went to Kells Beach, Co Kerry with a rod, reel and some mackerel feather traces, I got there just after high tide and fished for 2 hours but didnt no catch anything. However it was a great way to spend 2 hours,.

I was standing on the pier there and did see what looked like a Ray fish (Possibly a different species) and a few other fish by the pier.

I would like to increase my chances next time of catching some fish, I now know that the best spot to fish there is to the right on the rocks. Also there are pollock, wrasse, mackerel in season, dogfish and mullet .

Im wondering what would be the best times to fish and what to use eg float hook and bait, spinners, lures.

Just after i was leaving i got talking to a nice guy who was spearfishing, He caught 1 mullet and a lot of spidercrab

Out the rocks to the right or left will get you plenty of dabs and dog bottom fishing, 1up 1down rig will do fine

size 2 hooks baited with lug or small strips of mackerel for the dabs
size 1/0 and mackerel for the dogs. while they are on the bottom you can spin for pollack or float for wrasse.
If you are going out to the rocks beware of the Atlantic swell it can sneak up on you at times.

What times would you recommend regarding tides?

I would have been only there now and again during the summer so I never bothered fishing the pier as it would be full of kids.

fishing out on the rocks is deeper water over 30-50 feet so the fish should be there at all stages of the tide.
Although slack water at the top and bottom may be a bit slow for the bottom fishing.

there is another slip a bit further west it might be worth a look it would be sheltered it a westerly blow.

If you really want to enjoy Kells I would follow donals advice and fish the coming tide. If you have a second rod I would recommend a 1 hook trace on your spinning rod size 4 hook down the side of the steep rock ledges for the wrasse. Lug worm will do the trick and you will have some serious fun.
