If anyone is familiar with a Penn 525 Mag could they please tell me how you use the break system on a Penn 525 mag? Do you set it to fast before the cast and slide it to slow when you want to slow it down or vice versa?

you gotta set it to your casting speed lad...start casting with them on full and slowly leave off the mags each cast until you find your preferred setting...too little braking and she will overrun...i have a habit of leaving off all brakes or mags and using my thumb if she starts to overrun...its a individual thing.you just got to find what suits your cast...

Yep. Fast means brakes off. The 525 is a great reel.
Keep the brakes on full for a while and dont be in a rush to start turning them off, youll end up with the mother of all tangles.

Iv been using it for a bit and kind of have the hang of it from off the ground casting though when I try the pendulum it's a disaster. Was just wondering about the breaks because the couple of close up videos on YouTube of the reel seem to show lads casting then sliding the breaks to fast.

Them lads are tournament casters.
Just try to find a setting your comfortable with and leave it there.
Sportcast ireland are well worth a visit in wicklow if your trying to move from off the ground upto pendulum

you should defo learn how to service your 525 too...not looking after her will slow her down indefinatley after a period of time...

Yeah I ordered some of that rocket fuel but on reading that it seems complicated enough! I may give it a go though as it's never been serviced and have it awhile at this stage

If its an older 525 like mine, you might want to look at the brake magnets. After a long time trouble free, my casts started rats-nesting and when I opened up the reel I found the magnets had come off their seats and were bunched in a corner. Superglued them back in their spots and added some extra magnets which you can buy online. It helps, but as lucky13 sez, the thumb is still the best brake of the lot....

I had the same issue and their a pain in the ar$e to get back in. I put one in, tried the 2nd one and it pulled the first one back out, over and over again. I glued them too but used hot melt. The mags have to go in in some sort of + and - order and if i used super glue and made a mistake it was gonna be harder to get them back out.

Yeah, it was tricky all right - but it must've been way trickier manipulating a hot melt glue gun at the same time! I use debonder for freeing up botched superglue fixes.

I melted a small drop into each hole, then one by one gave each hole another quick heat off the lighter and popped in the magnet.
