Report:After a disappointing session on the South beach, Greystones last week , where we were plagued with 6 inch pin whiting,,,we travelled to a beach near Courtown in the hopes of something better. The East /Northeast wind didn't bode well but other than that it was a lovely day out. I was there an hour before Neil , but hadn't a bite when he arrived  . He had given me one of his rods, a Century Carbon Metal, which he had repaired, and I was eager to test it out. I found it nice and light after using the Grey's Triplex for the last few years. I paired it with a Penn Affinity I picked up at Christmas . Despite the Northeast breeze, I was able to get the crab bait out a fair distance  ,,,well nearly  . Despite the best of fresh peeler and lug,,,,we didn't pick up any smoothie pups to start our season. Well actually Fishface had one during the week at one of his secret locations  i had a 2 hook flapper in close with lug and rag and I was first in with a small Dab. I was delighted to be off the mark, and went for a photo,,,,but before I could say Jack Robinson, Fishface was putting a bigger Dab down to compare sizes

After that, we thought that the Flatties would come on the feed, but all we had were whiting,,,,double after double of them robbing our lovely bait. Neil was getting fed up and was tired from cutting 'oul wan's hair all day  ,,so he started to make noises about heading home. I told him that it would improve as I had lost a "biggie",,,a mystery fish which straightened my hook  . He wasn't falling for the 'oul "One that got away" story though and he packed up about 10pm. "Sure there's not even a doggie about,,,good luck i'm off", he said and disappeared into the darkness,,,,,briefly re-appearing as he had taken the wrong track despite the Lighthouse on top of his head. After a second hook was straightened , I changed hooks and not 10 minutes after he went I landed a double of doggies

followed by another double

The new rod was well tested and I found out the identity of the "mystery" fish,,,,the humble LSD  Another decent fish spat out the hook,,,,probably a decent rockling as the hook came back reversed, if you know what I mean  . After another single doggie ,I had a Dab/Doggie double on the 2 hook flapper and decided i'd had enough and packed up. No Bass or Smuts but at least it was better than pin whiting all night and who know's what will turn up next time
