East Cork 03/02/14

#1 Post by Firbolg »

People:Will and myself

Duration:few hours

Tide: mid tide rising to first hour of drop

Weather: not too bad, odd shower, heavy swell

Bait:crab, razor, lug, mack

Rigs:pennel pulleys (3/0), 2 hook flappers (1-2/0)

Results:pin dogfish, pin codling!!

Was eager to get out for the first bait session of the year, although we had good spring tides, the previous few days storm had churned up the coast. We headed out to a west Waterford beach for a look, the water was a consistent brown  the weed didn't look so bad but the wind was strong onshore and the surf was rolling in along way...decided not to fish it as it would be tough to be get a reasonable cast. Headed to Youghal strand and decided to fish the first beach close to corner of the estuary entrance. Seemed good, no seaweed but as the tide pushed a lot of small debris from the river was weighing on the line. Time to move.
Headed to Ballycotton pier, no weed and a bit more sheltered. After an hour I had a small dogfish on 3/0 pennel pulley (mack/razor) close in, shortly after Will landed a small codling (2hf lug) and as it reached high tide, it went quiet. About an hour into the drop we decided to call it a day. I reeled in to see my snood cleanly cut above hook, either crabs or a mystery fish!! It was good to get out and throw a line in the water anyway. Roll on the next session, hopefully the sea returns to a nice blue colour soon!!

I could imagine how rough the sea was ... well done on even getting a cast out let alone getting fish
