East Cork -- Episode II The Return of the Angler

Results: aces and pains with a big grin for me, John happy to be catching again

Well after last Sundays little session it was back to the same venue Wednesday evening. Brought along John Warner to see if he could improve on his last outing of a blank.

Started fishing about 17:00 and straight away I had a fish on . Unhooked a 37cm coalie and put it in a rock pool, baited up and cast out again. Headed to the jeep to get the phone for the photo shoot. When I got back from my short stroll I had another fish on a 34cm coalie. Pic taken and the two fish swam off.

A small lull gave me a chance to get the second rod in the water. The next cast on both rods drew a blank while John got going with a pin coalie.

As the tide pushed in I ended fishing from the rocks while John stayed on the beach
After that things got moving and the fish started to show. With no surfers around the rod fished at about 120+yds brought in a coalie a cast and the rod fishing about 60/70yds was catching flounder.
By 19:00, 2 hours in, I had 7 single coalies a doubler of flounder and a doubler of a flounder and a shore rocking while John fishing about 30yds to the left was only picking up the odd shore rockling.

From then until 20:30 fish were coming in every cast with coalies of 47cm, 49cm and 50cm and some nice flounder with some of the better coalies been caught on the rod closer in. I will admit to losing a good fish which stopped me in my tracks a few times while reeling it in, only to drop it in a big wave breaking about 40yds out.

Best fish of the night will have to go to John with a rarely caught species these days a lovely plump 47cm cod

My final count for 3½ hours fishing 14 coalies, (smallest 34cm) 8 flounder and 2 (pin) shore rockling. Not bad going as I fished with the same rigs on each rod, I never got a chance to bait up a second trace

John had 4 shore rocking, 2 coalies, 1 flounder and that cod which will be in a frying pan tomorrow.

Final comment, it was no place for old men I know the body is shattered. Hauling fish and scurrying over rocks is hard going.

I must get into this pier fishing I hear it is very relaxing

Some fine coalies in particular there Donal, I can't seem to get any over the 25cm mark, they must all head south to fatten up.

This post and the last one have been an inspiration I went out 3 times last week because of the pictures you posted, It's been a month since i hooked into a nice coalie, I two small ones in cobh recently, I cant wait to get out again tomorrow night please keep posting Donal, I love seeing catches like this, well done, I'm not going to ask you where you were the joy for me is finding out myself, I try a new spot every week.
