People:Me

Duration:3 hrs

Tide:2hrs flood and 1 ebb

Weather:Mild, slight breeze, some showers.

Bait:Fresh rag, frozen lug and mackerel

Rigs:2 hook flappers, single clipped.

Results:Rockling, pin whiting, small codling and coalfish.

Report:
I happened to be in Belfast on Wednesday afternoon and with a spare half hour to kill, called in to have a look at Belfast Angling Centre which had just received a consignment of fresh rag. So I took a bag and must say they were in tip-top condition. Now that I had some fresh bait it made sense to use it so off to the Wee County. There was a nice bit of surf coming in with no wind to speak of and although it seemed cold when I first got out of the car, by the time I was suited and booted I was quite comfortable. This beach must be a bit like the one Rockhunter described in his First bass of 2014 report, flat but steeper in the last 30m with a distinct change in gradient, (not that I was expecting bass!). It was here that I aimed the close in rod and even while I was baiting up the distance rod, the close in one was bouncing away. On retrieve it was a small 5 beard rockling on a rag bait. While I was re baiting this rod the other one started nodding, a small codling. The bites came steadily, mostly close in, with a double of small codling, then a double of pin whiting. Then, while I was re-baiting the distant rod, some line pulled off the close rod and the tip gave a couple of determined tugs. I tightened into it and could feel a decent weight pulling back, then through the surf came something about 2 feet long, white along 1 side and light brown on the other....you've guessed; a 2ft long, light brown and white plastic bag! Around high water the bites dropped off and there was a lot of weed for a while resulting in one lost rig. A mound of weed the size of a tackle box and the surf surge doesn't give you much of a chance. The weed cleared after a while and a few single codling to 25cm along with some more whiting and a single small coalie turned up but as the tide dropped away so too did the bites, par for this course. So with a total of 4 species and 13 small fish I called it a night.

Nice going John. If I was to put money on another species other than whiting I'd have went with flounder in Louth. Nice variety to get, the picture of the rocklings head is class. Great colours on them.
