W Waterford 30th & 31st Dec

#1 Post by Stan »

People: Me, Leon & Keelan

Duration: 2 hours each night

Tide: falling

Weather: Grand

Bait: Mackerel, Sandeel, Lug & Mussel

Results: Whiting, dog, bullhuss, conger :D :D :D

Report

Headed down to a local pier around 17.00 with the 2 lads. First in was Keelan with a plump whiting followed quickly by another :D .

Leon's whiting.jpg
After a lull Leon got a nice whiting just around 2lb mark. :P :P

My rod was then nearly hauled over the pier wall as a very large fish grabbed the bait….unfortunately no hook up.

I then had a double of whiting with the bigger fish again around 2 lb. :D :D

Meanwhile the inlaws arrived to see how we were getting on. I was just picking up my rod when a huge fish took the bait. After several minutes a very large conger was brought up to the wall :D :D . My brother-in-law tried his best to pull him up the wall but unfortunately the 60lb line snapped   . Have to say that I was a bit gutted to lose such a big fish.

The following night we went down again. I set up a rod for whiting with size 6 hooks and one with strong line and hooks in the hope of getting the monster again.

First in was Leon with a whiting about 1.8lb. :D
Stan's strap.jpg
My whiting rod then started to head over the wall. I just grabbed it before it was dragged off into the depth. This time the plan was to walk the fish around to the lower side of the pier. It was not a monster but certainly fought very hard on the small rod. I had doubts that the small hook would not straighter on. From the strong struggle it was obviously a conger. As it was over sand I had no fear of it diving into a crevice and not being able to get it out again. Eventually a strap conger about 10lb appeared at the side of the pier. I thought that my line would break but managed to haul the fish up the wall. :D :D The fish was photographed and returned to fight another day.

Keelan then landed a long but very skinny sick looking whiting and quickly followed this with a lovely bullhuss of about 4 lb :D :D .

More whiting were caught by us all and I had a dog for my final fish.

Two good nights fishing overall.

Thanks for the comments lads.

The congers tools very small bits of Mackerel aimed at the whiting.

There's a difference between laziness and spending 70 or 80 euro a trip on diesel trying a mark on spec.
i dare say you yourself have asked for the odd tip on a mark.
Would you fill the tank and drive to Dublin looking for a mark on spec?
Doubt it.
Am not trying to antagonise you but when visiting anglers in search of Smoothhounds look for pointers up this direction, they are well looked after, have even known lads to take them along on a session to make sure they get a fish.

Happy new year

Fair enough on spending 70/80 euro a trip on diesel, but id doubt it would cost that much for the lads living in and around Waterford. All im saying is sometimes I just don't get people who ask very "open" question on here these days, especially when they live close bye[laziness].
Won't ever travel to Dublin for fishing anyways so no panic on that score, however when I do go east of course I will generally make a call or two to people ive known and trust for years regarding whats going on and vice versa when they ring me on whats happening down this neck of the woods, all done behind close doors as I don't think people who I don't know should benefit from getting the inside track[following my and others legwork] .Fair enough if not localish, advice is always needed and gratefully appreciated, but when a mark is nearby it shouldn't be too difficult to do a bit of a reccy after all that's part and parcel of fishing and the only way experience for future trips can be obtained.
Fair enough on the smoothound front too but I think if you look closely down south theres a cod thread running the last year so people don't come down wasting their time and money and good bait for codling that have been very thin on the ground this year which a very helpful thread for non locals.
Apologies if I seem very black and white on this subject I don't mean to be but I and many others have learnt the hard way and its left a very bitter taste. What I will add is if anyone needs up to date on a venue then ask behind the scenes not for the world to see and in some cases abuse. The worst that can happen is people won't tell the truth or won't reply and in such cases I think that's a good sign on a mark
I realise newer anglers might be used to having info etc passed on willingly these days but so much more can be learnt if people did a bit of homework themselves as they will benefit from first hand experience rather than having everything handed to them on a plate as that just makes brain cells go to mush and skill will never blossom.
