Spiddal pier, 15/12/13

#1 Post by Tackleholic »

People: Myself

Duration: 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Tide: High tide 4:00 pm

Weather: Strong SW wind and showers towards the end

Bait: Mackeral

Rigs: Running ledger, two-hook paternoster

Results: Doggie x1, Strap conger x 3

Report:
After fishing this venue a few times over the past few weeks, I've managed to land dogfish, strap conger and whiting (not 100% sure - could be coalie?).
Spent a few hours today as darkness arrived. Big swell. Had a nice bite after 20 minutes or so but failed to hook up. Ten minutes later, the first fish was landed after a good tussle. Nice dogfish. Went on to catch three strap conger, the biggest being around the 4 lbs mark. The conger bites were very gentle; barely noticeable in the wind. Also lost a good fish at the pier; couldn't make out what it was in the darkness.
All in all, a nice way to spend a few hours!

Not a bad return for your efforts, well done.
I may be wrong but the Whiting looks like a poor Cod.

Cheers.
Definitely a handy spot. Especially when a gale is blowing.
Is there anywhere worth exploring between Barna and Spiddal? I've fished a lovely spot in Carraroe (left turn in the village) but wouldn't mind finding a couple of spots closer to Galway.
