Casting Reel Down

#1 Post by PJKaiser »

Have done extensive casting practice recently and now hitting 150 yards with ease.
However I am in a bit of a quandry as regards to technique - I have been casting reel down and now when fishing dont have any leverage to play a fish/pull throughweed on the retrieve.
I know reducers are the solution but I have two rods which werent supplied with any - Penn Powerstix and Shakespeare Agility MX.
Do I basically need to fish reel up with this set up?
I dont see any reducers online that will do a range of rods, just conoflex/zziplex which are made to order and this involves posting the butts to them.
Was looking at Abu Grip Locs - would it be possible to cast reel down and slide these up for the retrieve?
Would hate to have to fish reel up as have got a good cast now reel down and am casting with confidence.
Any advice appreciated.

you dont have to send the rods to conoflex of zziplex just tell them the inside diameter of the butt

Stick it in on your hip and pump away, like casting reel down it gets easier the more you do it.

You can also look to try a butt pad as well, there are a few small ones at cheap money in Henrys. You might look like a big game angler on the beach, but they will make it a little more comfortable when reeling in fish with the reel in a low position. After a while you will get more used to fishing with the reel in this position.

i prefer up the butt as its less stress on the back, down the butt can give a nasty burn on your fore arm :x and i like the extra leverage putting ones butt between the legs offers

You dont have to put the reel right at the bottom of the rod, 8-10inches up is the norm, that will give you the leverage you need to fish comfortably without having to buy a reducer...
