day or night?

#1 Post by johnjosh29 »

I have fished a rock mark at day time catching a few small codling..
would it be worth trying at night or would it likely fish the same at night as it does in the day.?
thanks.

99% of the time it will be better at night as fish will feed more under the cover of darkness,,however the darkness will bring more species out so what you might be tackling, might not be what you will be catching,,,for instance if you are having success with strips of mackerel for small cod during the day,,,you might not have it at night as i can nearly bet my life that a conger will get it first as they are ferroucious at night but this might be not your case.on the upside for you is that you greatly increase your chances of getting one of those bigger cod

be more careful at night and keep warm with light gear(thermal socks, vests, longjohns) and light overalls(consider even wearing a small slim lifejacket if it is viseable).try not wear heavy flotation suits if you are fishing off a high rock mark or any if possible as your mobility is under serious pressure,,,do not even attempt to wear waders

lighting is probably the most important as it will give you more confidence--decent long lasting battery headlight and also if you have a good latern,,,,the one i have was bout in an outdoors shop and aswell as light it gives off heat as it works off gas

one other thing im doing now is getting to know the rockmarks egde better by using a strip of reflectve tape(3metres) along the edge and held down by stones,,,,atleast you will know to stand well behind that when reeling in,,,go into any good motor factors and buy a strip,,,i find the white or the orange colour are the best but the red is fine too,,,i also have red and orange strips on the tripod for easily locating when casting away from the tripod on a long draw beach or being away up the beach at the box if not beside you.currently now at my local beaches,i have strips on the timbers of a fence where i can find my access out of the beach more easily at night

phones(fully charged)and family knowledge are vital, letting them know roughly what time you will be home at and where you are,,food like a sandwhich, marsbar, aswell as a soft drink or a flask is all in favour to your safety

there are just a few tips that i use when night rock fishing,,,you will pick many more up urself

best thing you could ever bring is a friend

best of luck brian

Just to add, I've been using lugworm and sand-gapers tied to the hook with bait elastic seems to be great bait. Hopefully at night it will work also...

They are like clams with a siphon which you would cut or pull off when fishing. I found them when looking for lugworm and when I used them I got great results just as good if not better than lugworm. They can be easily be located by a key hole depression in the sand. Any other people use these? Do they work at night? Thanks.

also called gapers clams, pissers, colliers they can be a very good bait for cod and bass but best to let them go off for a few days so they are nice and smelly this is the way the fish would find them after a storm as them live fairly deep in the sand so the fish cant really get to them but a storm would wash them out of there burrows if your ever digging bait in dublin sandymount strand is full of them
