Crabs peel early in summer and also in september the males go into a mass peel, but not all locations peel. Some do and some dont.

its all down to water temp and weather ,so every year is different down south would have peelers long before and long after the northern end of the country .and no you wont be wasting your time i,d say the shannon would be stuffed with em !

Put down a length of wavin pipe - it seems to attract them, perhaps for shelter while they're vulnerable.

Watched an interesting wee video on youtube recently on how to find the female peeler beneath the male crab. I havent really tried hard to find peelers yet but gonna give it a go round here, therese no shortage of shore crab its just finding the right place for a good density of peelers to make it worth the effort.

I wonder what people with peeler gathering experience make of this approach to finding peeler- looking for the male under the weed, lifting him out of the way and digging out the peeler female beneath?????? They explain its cos she can only be mated with when in moulting mode, has anyone else gathered reasonable numbers by this method of looking?

Yeah Shane, he seems to be very displeased in the video, getting the nippers up to try and stop you spoiling his fun. Can peelers be frozen as they are found or is it wiser to peel them first before freezing? Think I'll have a go at low tide this evening, any tips on type of ground to look on, anything might help me not completely waste my time?

Ye they can be frozen with the shell on but I think peeling them first is better have you ever tried to peel a frozen crab
