Its a butterfish ( Pholis gunnellus)

My first thoughts were that it was a shore rockling

but on a second look at 03.06am I spotted the black dots on the dorsal fin and removed the post. Whiskey can do strange things to the eyes and brain

yep, deffo a butterfish which is also called a "gunnel" in some places due to it's latin name

thank you everyone for the identification, thanks donal for the photo the fish had the spots on its back but they are hard to see in my photo
