Help and advice needed about Rod and reel

Hi lads I don't know whether I am putting this up in the right part of the forum are not? I am a total beginner when it comes to sea fishing but I mean to do a lot of it from now on. I used to be very big into match fishing for coarse fish and specimen hunting. What with work and the young family I had to give up. The last couple of years I have done a bit of salmon fishing and caught a few fish but it all goes on water levels and when the fish are running and if you can get to the river at the right time. It has not really hooked me. So I was considering going back to coarse fishing but then I found you.
I never thought much about sea fishing but in the last few weeks I accidentally began reading your forum and a few other forums about sea fishing and have decided this is for me. I used to love night fishing I never realised you could do this on a beach. Anyway we are in the process of purchasing a house in the Belmullet area about 2 min from a beach. I have the rods that will do for spinning but bait fishing was always my love. So I want to buy a beach rod and fixed spool reel. I would like to buy a fear decent reel but I don't want to pay big money for a Rod may be 100 or so because once I begin to learn more about sea fishing then I'm sure I will know what Rod will suit me best. So could anyone recommend a beach Rod and reel for the Belmullet area.

Hey Man, the thing at the minute seems to be long rods and fixed spool reels, maybe try a Shakespear Salt long surf 15ft? I just got one and have had it out for 2 sessions and it seems to be perfect for the beach fishing, with a little backbone to handle anything a bit bigger. Team it up with a bigger fixed spool with braid (I'm using a Biomaster with 50lb Penn Braid straight through), the advantages to braid are better bite indication and a lower diameter of line in relation to poundage meaning you won't have to bother with a Shockleader, this will handle anything that most beaches will throw at you and it seems like a quality rod for a knock down price.

Thanks for your reply.I was looking at a Daiwa Seahunter X 14’ and a Daiwa Opus Bull OPB5000 What do you think? Anyone every used them . they are available in a local shop.

I got the daiwa emcast 6000 a few months back and love it so far, have 20lb ultima f1 line on it.Its bout 100 quid in the shops, got it for 70/80 on the net

I want a good reel. I have been looking at the Shimano Biomaster 8000 XS-B and Penn Surfblaster 8000 on the net but it is hard to buy of the net when i simply know nothing about sea tackle. I dont want to jump in and buy, then wish I had bought something else. So I am after ideas from you that know.

if its fixed spool ,penn powerstick 13 foot great all rounder for beach under or around 100 reel wise if you can get an ian golds beach reel you get extra spools very handy!ian golds rods are good too but a bit more pricey then again it would be a rod for life rather than a wait and see rod ?i,m sure paul mason on the site would see you right on a combo ?

ive only started beach fishing this year and dont have a lot of experience, im a rock fisherman at heart and have been doing that for 25 years, i have the penn powerstix pro 15ft 9 which i use for wanging on out as far as i can but for the inclose stuff where you are using a 2-4 ounce watch lead and casting it less than 30 yards i use one of my old carp rods. i also use my old roach float rods for float fishing of rocks and piers, what im saying is, though you will need to buy some beefier gear for sea fishing, dont be afraid to try the gear you already have, esp in calmer weather where you can get away with lighter leads you can also get away with lighter rods, and the lighter the rod the more fun in my opinion

Agree with Drew about the salt rod. It looks to be a very decent rod for the money.
