ferrypoint for codling are the muscle beds snaggy?

well lads might be headin down here durin the week have checked it out before but never fished it seems to hold a strong current? an are the muscle beds very snaggy will i lose all my gear hear? i know theres been a few cod takin off this part recently but just lookin on some info as i haven fished it thanks

Hi yes it can be snaggy but the beds seem to run on the left hand side of the point u can see them at low tide generally most lads cast towards youghal into the deeper main channel where theres only a very odd snag and more fish

Seanie35, is right, Fish the right side of the beds for the codling during the Lw to high warning though you'll need 6oz to hold bottom during the ebb the current is very strong, even a 6oz might not hold bottom during it! but when it slackens it gets easy (but keep your bait fresh as the crabs are around that area), on the left side further down mainly holds flats fish on a rising tide there, short cast for them, the mussel beds are snaggy during the tides as they open up to filter the water and they will happily close on your line making it bloody hard to retrive, though I have manage to bully a few mussels up still tightly closed on my line and hooks, but either side is clear sand, though on the retrive about 2-3 feet there is bracken weed that will snag you but a gentle rod lift and you'll be fine... BUT the main question is .. are there codling to be got?? the last few days its been quiet, though this thursday we are expecting to see a serious temperture drop of -5 will that be low and long enough to drag a few codling in?? Im not sure, BUT I'll be waiting to see the reports

If you stick to the right hand side you will be relatively free of snags, there are still little pockets of mussel there as ive pulled in a few which have closed on my hooks but nothing to be very worried about. As Creep says tho, you will find it hard to hold bottom with a 6oz if the tide is ripping through, ive found however, once you cast out, stop spooling line out and start walking to the right with the rod, it seems to help set the grips on the lead and you should hold without too many problems, certainly worked for me whenever i did this....

I also found that of the few codling i caught here none of them registered any hits on my line, i only realised they were on whilst i was reeling in to change bait, and on the note of changing bait, be prepared to do this often as the crabs there are prolific !!!

forgot to mention rule of thumb for ferrypoint 2hrs before LW two hours after, generally, BUT fish can be caught between theses and over these times... just the current when it rips ... IT RIPS! anybody measure what knots it flows out at? Im just curious, as i can see havin a boat down there you'd have to time your departure and arrival fairly good ?
