spurdogs

Alrite lads. Its been long time since ive graced ne beach with rod and reel due work and other things. Just wondering has ne one tried for spurdogs off the beach along the east coast or have they been and gone. Ive never
fished for them before or would no were to start. Just curious as i think i remember a topic about them this time last year

SHORE SPECIES 2012... coalie,

boat species09~~~pollack,cod,haddock,whiting,doggies,bullhuss,tope,john dory,thornebsck,blonde,blue shark,spur dog,wrase,gunnard,pouting,

shore species 2010~~~ dab,flounder,thorneback ray,pollack,plaice,coalies,turbot,wrasse,bull huss, lsd...

boat trips 4 result..pouting,, spurdog.pollack,
shore trips 2010.... 36.....

wish list 2010..sea trout....

There was a few spurs caught off wicklow head from a boat a few weeks back, so there is no reason not to try for them from the shore.
large mackerel bait or fresh herring if you can get some would be a good choice, herrings are inshore at this time of year :wink:
i see your from kilmuckridge, that part of the coast was a hot spot for them many moons ago get out and give it a shot :wink:

In the late eighties Before Spurdogs not smoothhounds were overfished by commercials,they were common from wexford beaches(curracloe to blackwater)and sliver strand in wicklow.Around easter was a good time as many were caught from blackwater beach on the yearly good friday comp.Hopefully the are making a comeback,so you could try this venue,all fish baits and heavy mono traces will work.Tight Lines

Thanks for the replys lads. Im sure i read a post last year about fishing for spurdogs around the kilmichael point area at this time of the year. How long do they hang around for?. Are calm conditions better and would pulley rigs be best? Has ne one had ne joy before?. Pms welcome
