Re: spinning info needed please.
lines just a tad heavy . I'd go for 12lb and then use a flouro leader of 8lb .

12 lb mono is too light for a beginner new to lure fishing, you're better off sticking with something a bit heavier, if you hook a decent Pollock down Clare way you will panic as it dives into the kelp and you will loose it on 12lb mono. But if you use braid you will have more control over the fish, better contact and more sport, and alot of lures saved when you get snagged as you can pull them out most times, 12 to 18lb will do you, if its your first time using braid then get 18 , try powerpro and don't use cheap braid as you will end up with too many windknots. Don't bother using a leader either, unless you know your knots.
Good luck.
Good luck.

ide second this motion braid gives you way more contact with the fish, and even with your lure i find with briad u can feel every movement of your lure in the water, and when you get a good bite theres no give in it like mono and the hook sinks in good!!!!!!Richie07 wrote:12 lb mono is too light for a beginner new to lure fishing, you're better off sticking with something a bit heavier, if you hook a decent Pollock down Clare way you will panic as it dives into the kelp and you will loose it on 12lb mono. Re: spinning info needed please.
Problem with casting plugs on 18lb mono is that they tend to be to light to get any distance. I would go for soft plastics also as you can add an in line weight to help you get the lure out. I would also go for braid if i had the choice as it is a much narrower diameter than mono and gives you a better cast.

Re: spinning info needed please.
hi dan i fish clare alot over the summer around blackhead and use 8/9lb mono i find this best for the sport but is all so strong enough to take big fish in when played right but i think you might be to early if your going after pollock we dont start geting them till around may or so down there and i would say soft plastic or a slow retrived sandeel or rag worm would be the way to go good luck
