Abu 6500 hi speed issue.

#1 Post by Hooker »

Right I need help. I shredded the main gear in my hi speed last august (pulling ray not weed thank god :D ) and only got round to trying sorting it last week. Bearing in mind I am a recent convert to the world of multipliers. I know now 6500's are not really for hauling.

I got replacement main and pinion gears and a speed bullet (to try) from BlackDog and completely broke down the reel cleaned (lots of brass fillings to get rid of), oiled and greased the whole lot with Rocket fuel grease and oil.

Word of warning, petrol and cheap plastic shot glasses are not a good combination when soaking the bearings, plastic melts and screws up the bearings  . Luckily I had a set of abec 9 bearings that were meant for a different reel. I slowly reassembled the reel and everything seemed to be running nice and smooth except for one thing.

I went to turn the handle a couple of times and went to put it in free spool, I missed the button stopped winding but the spool continued rotating making a not too pleasent noise  . Turned the handle a couple more times without putting it into free spool same thing happened. Broke down the reel again and reassembled everything again and the same happened.

Is this due to removing the plastic ratchet cog and installing the speed bullet? Have I messed up somewhere else? I don't want to bring it back into service until I'm sure it's good. Will be spending the weekend in the shed tinkering and will try any suggested remedies. Spent my beer money on a new rod

Thanks in advance to anyone who offers an opinion or advice!

AG, the reel is in Wexford and I'm in Dublin unfortunately. So most likely won't have it when I meet Paddy.

It was a second hand reel I sourced off the site so I use a parts diagram I printed and it's not the clearest. I'm treating it as my "learning reel" as in learn to service this one properly before tackling my other reels in case I make a propper dogs dangly bits of it. I'm handy enough with this kinda stuff normally. Though i'm still only learning about multi's so if you could point me even in the direction of which part to check it would be a help and appreciated.
