SQUID as Bait
I just bought a bag of frozen prepared raw squid from Tescos to use as bait. Any opinions out there on its use and effectiveness?

Squid is a great bait. Excellent for tipping lugworm for Whiting.
I have also found squid to be a excellent bait for Dabs.
Hope this helps.

Re: SQUID as Bait
Well I tried Clogherhead on Tuesday with a pier rig baited with Mackerel and Squid to no avail, I did drag in a dead Dogfish that was half eaten and also had a good staring contest with a Seal!
2 gentlemen were pulling in a lot of small sprats on micro feathers from the corners within the pier!

Don't disregard it just yet !Every mark has its favoured baits which local knowledge and experience will teach and sometimes its just pure luck. I try to take a variety of baits and experiment with different mixes. One things for sure no matter what bait you use perseverance will always score fish
2013 species : coalies,flounder(pb),whiting,dogfish,5 beard rockling
2012 species : cod,whiting,coalies;flounder,5 beard rockling,bass,dogfish,dab

Do not disregard it at all. In the Uk it is a very popular bait, especially the calamari.Preston wrote:Don't disregard it just yet !Every mark has its favoured baits which local knowledge and experience will teach and sometimes its just pure luck. Best sort is the unwashed type (known as dirty) not the squid obtained from the supermarket which has been washed and probably bleached to make it more appealing for consumption, but not for fish.
The small calamari can be ontained in normally 1ib boxes or 5ib boxes (frozen).
Excellent bait for Bass, flatfish, smoothhound and rays, Cod etc etc etc from shore and boat
Can be used as a tipper bait for smaller varieties ie flatties, bream & bass. Or whole mounted on a pennel rig and wrapped with the old elasticated
cotton. The body can be filled with lug/mackerel and closed with elasticated for Bass/cod/conger/smothhounds/spurdog etc.
A very sought after and used sucessful bait in the Uk

Re: SQUID as Bait
At the very least I will keep taking squid with me, it was very durable on the hook, I only changed it when it stopped having any smell! My plan now is to let some squid get stinky by leaving it out a few days and combine with lugworm.
Here is a link to the a similar squid product I used if anyone is interested

Re: SQUID as Bait
Stinky Squid can be very effective for small fish in certain conditions. Cut into long thin strips and leave out to go off, freeze and refreeze when not used.
An old trick we done years ago with squid, was to leave it next to your Tilly lamp it would take on the light and glow in the dark!!
