I think nearly everyone who fishes the west coast has had this thought at soem time or another, i know of no one who has had any success. My personal thoughts would be any of the really deep water marks, possibly even off the arran islands.

The only place i know for sure they have been caught reasonably close to the shore is around inverin, the north shore area. Talk to Kevin about this though, he would know far better than i would. Also i reckon you would need a mighty long cast and willing to lose lots of gear.

Never heard of any coming off the Clare side for years but I dont know if anyone is putting in serious time to find them. An auld fella told me they used to get them off the boats out past Cliffs of Moher

There's a deepwater rock mark between Dromore West and Easky in sligo you might be aware of . I've only had one off it but then again I used to only fish it maybe twice a year when i was younger

Wow, what a informative post. SAI is lucky to have you Brian for providing quality, detailed replies to topics!

Lucky, i have had them off the pier you are talking about too, but not to any size. I am told that the pier in question still throws up good size ones, its just a matter of putting the hours in. Have also had small ones off Salthill, but thats at distance and they haven't been anything to write home about.

I reckon its the sort of thing where you will have to fish those really rough spots and lose gear to have any chance of a decent fish. I wish you luck with it though!!

the only west coast cod ive seen was one about 2 or 3 lb off inniscrone pier, 3 or 3 years ago, over the back of the wall into the rough - i also think Yorkshireman lost one about 4 lb near Sligo, they sure as hell seem few and far between...
