Sourcing bait

#1 Post by alancooper »

Does anyone know of a tackle shop in the Donegal/Sligo area where I can get Ammo bait? - or will I have to use pricey mail order?

Land and sea is by far the best. Sean does baitbox sandeel much better than the ammo stuff that Barton smith in Sligo sell. He also sells cracking mack. It's a proper shop that caters for the sea angler. The shops in Sligo are very poor, there isn't the demand in Sligo. There hasn't been any ammo in Barton smith for a while and the replacement stuff is very ropey.

Great help - I stopped shopping for frozen sand eel in Bundoran a year or more ago (it just fell apart) - and usually have my own mack/dig my own lug. I will call in and get some stuff from Sean.

Sean was telling me that alright. It's the best shop bought Mack I've used. It's very well looked after and the flesh is very firm. I usually freeze down my own but I've ran out already so it's great to be able to source good frozen mack.

Alan most of the local shops source it from the same guy , he doesn't blast freeze his bait so the sandeel is very poor. Avoid the sandeel in gold packets. When Barton smith have ammo they are usually very good but sometimes they'll only do the smallest ammo sandeel, great for sea trout but I find them too small for ray etc.
