north antrim conger

#1 Post by jonnyarchi »

i was out fishing on saturday at my usual rock mark and the fishing was slow so i decided to rig up my spare beach rod and try for conger as i had been wanting to do this for a while. after 20 minutes the rod got a few mighty rattles and i was into my first conger! what a powerfull fish they are, im totally hooked on them and would love to catch more. could anyone please point me in the direction of a good mark for conger fishing in the north antrim area?
i was using a 4/6oz beach rod rigged with 40lb mainline and a rotten bottom rig with a 200lb hooklength. this gear held up well but what do you guys use?

No need for a wire snood for conger!

200lb mono is a bit of overkill also. You can go a lot lighter than that.

Try blackhead near carrickfergus or garron point or ramore head portrush or portrush harbour :D

Well i,ve always used 200lb mono for the snood+rotten bottom if over rough ground (wire more likeley to damage the eel).cox and wraule meathook 6/0-even up to 10/0 .if im just out for conger id have 40 lb line and a fair bit of it (just to be sure in the rare case my leader knot gave).
Drop net-t bar gloves etc vital!the only reason for thoses hooks is they are extremley strong!

all the best with it

i do have a wire snood but i tend to use 200lb mono in case i have to cut the trace if the eel is deep hooked (i use bronzed hooks). thanks to all for the advice :D
i will be fishing my usual mark but was just wondering if there are any other marks known to hold them. if no one wants to broadcast it on a forum they could pm me.
