dun laoghaire, west pier

#1 Post by sammypants 13 »

I will be fishing the west pier sometime next week as I will be up in Dublin.
I read the last report on the pier and there seemed to be loads of fish
I'm just wondering how much longer do the pouting, pollack and wrasse stay about for?
Would it be worth trying to catch a mackerel?
Also, is the pier safe to fish at night; would anybody be hanging about on the west pier?
I'm thinking of using a 2 hook rig with ragworms as bait.

Thanks

should be able to pick up some whiting and maybe some pollack. odd mackerel might still be around as i still see people feathering off the end of the west pier. personally i wouldn't fancy fishing there at night as you'll get some wino's at the back of the soap factory ( and I'm a coward anyway ) and its not as well lit as the east

Fished the west pier a few times over the past few weeks. It seemed to fish better at night but can be quite difficult spotting bites if its windy. The vast majority of fish are very small and you will be destroyed by the pin whiting if using rag. All the usual suspects will make an appearance- Wrasse, Whiting, Pout and Pollock. I wouldn't bother with the Mackrel myself but you never know..... :D

I have tried using a pin whiting as bait at distance and missed a couple of good bites, so there are bigger fish.......

You will never be alone on the west pier. There are always your 4 legged friends there to keep you company, personally I wouldn't fish it on my own at night.

whiterock is a fair bit from Dunlaoghaire, and not that easy to find if you dont know the area very well, it is also quite remote i would be much happier fishing the west pier on my own at night rather than whiterock, plenty of odd balls down here aswell, and it would not be that easy to get out of if you needed to get out in a hurry/over 100 steps
