tactics for cod ?
Hi all,
I'm going to head out for a session Wednesday or Thursday night and looking for basic advice really ? I'm going to give Monkstown a bash so my plan is use razor and squid as bait on a 2 hook flapper rig and a 5oz gripper lead.Should I go for a single hooked rig clipped down and also what hook sizes are best ?
Thanks lads

Re: tactics for cod ?
I've used pennel and flapper rigs and have had success with both, I usually use size 4/0 & 5/0 hooks, but I've caught plenty of big fish on samll size 2 hooks aswell. I suppose just try a few different tactics and see whats best for you. I think the biggest issue in monkstown is trying to get to the bottom and keeping the bait there.

Re: tactics for cod ?
Personally I prefer a pennell pulley rig or just your basic pennell rig,as regards hooks,3/0 or 4/0.also a lug/squid coctail, or peeler crab/squid cocktail work well for me.

Re: tactics for cod ?
Pennel pulley'd be my choice also, and bait the top hook, ie, a size 2 or so, with ssmall strip of mack or worm, so to hook a pin whiting or such, boom, live bait to lure a big aul leviathan in .

Re: tactics for cod ?
crab bait seems to be taking most cod down there from what i gather no success with razor but last winter i did!mac for the whiting theres plenty around.but you,ll get dogs aswell.if your on for cod pulley pennels 2h flappers with 3/0s is what i usually use all the way for the cod! 5oz anyway and if its weedy flick out your cast 20-30 yards from the wall (in darkness)with mac you,ll get whiting in close there.

Re: tactics for cod ?
cod love crab but cocktails seem to do well lug and razor combo works well and squid and rag works too if their are plenty of fish you will get cod on mac but as the lads said mac and dogs can just wreck your session ,for BIG baits and less danger of snaggin up the pully /pully pennel has to be no1 rig ,tell the cod i said so!
forgot to mention the longer your pully rig the higher up your lead will be in the water on the retreave if you hook a fish ,not a bad thing if you intend to fish dewall

Re: tactics for cod ?
Fished youghal for the cod last year and the only bait that scored for us out of crab, mac, rag and razor was the razor. One of the lads got a decent coalie on rag or mac (not certain) but the cod didn't touch crab for us all night and we ended up landing about thirty as far as my memory serves me. Hope this might help man. Tight lines
