sorry about this!you,d think id be able to tell the difference!right well cant make up my mind weather this is a poorcod or a pouting which seems doubtful and im almost certain its not a whiting.loads of scales came off the fish when handling!like a herring!

hi fergal
photo is not great but have to say poor cod as i cant see any stripes on it that you would get with a pouting of that size

thats what i thought initially but a sort of wideness about the midsection which i havent seen in poor cod before but your right quite small!cheers as usual :) :roll:

POOR COD Trisopterus minutus M.
Fr. Capelan; Ge. Zwergdorsch; Du. Dwergbolk; It. Merluzzo cappellano;
Sp. Mollero.
Three dorsal, two anal fins. Upper jaw somewhat the longer; a thin
barbel under chin. Body less deep than in previous species. First
anal begins about level with end of first dorsal; pelvics reach back
only to the vent. Pinkish brown, Without bands. Grows to about 10
inches.
POUTING Trisopterus luscus M.
Ir. Trosgan sturoige; Fr. Tacaud; Ge. Franzosendorsch; Du. Steenbolk;
It. Merluzzo francese; Sp. Faneca.
Three dorsal, two anal fins. Upper jaw somewhat the longer; a thin,
wispy barbel under chin. Body rather deep. First anal fin being well
under first dorsal. In adults, pelvic fins reach back beyond beginning
of anal fin. Pinkish-bronze in colour, usually with broad vertical
bands, but these may fade after death. Grows to over 4 lb.

poor cod.
its all about the front anal fin and how far forward it is on the fish. on a pouting it would reach in line with below the front dorsal fin and would also overlap the pectoral fin. defo a poor cod.........

excellent photo!! Well done Fergal,
But I have a question as I know the two speices are vary similar, I was told the Pouting scales come off in the hand very easily where as the Poor Cod doesn't ...is this true??

i dont know being honest :? !the poor cod i had before had scales come off them in the majority of cases though!

Forget the scales falling off or whether they are big, small or pink.
The only way to identify the difference is the positioning of the anal fin and the first dorsal fin
