just depends on how you fish it an the tactics you use.

i've been having good success on crab and lug baits as well as the usual rag/mac. theres flounder, dab, turbot on it. also coalies and dog fish. had a few whiting the other day aswell. oh and also bass there too.

i always find that certain parts of that beach just dont throw up as many fish - where have you been trying?

Hi weedave, I have fished it up at the big signposts to the left as you come on the beach, halfway between the signposts and the entrance and then at the entrance, been using rag and mackerel, both with grippers or a rolling lead when conditions allow, tried all types of tides!

Had one night maybe this time last year at Downhill where me and the mate both got a very decent flounder each, and that was an all nighter, but since then its been really poor for us.

I tried Castlerock as well, Tuesday past. i fished beside the rocks to the very far left of the beach where the wee cottage is! But not even a bite, bait was coming back untouched lol!

I know that's what happens in fishing, the fun and games, the highs and lows! But i was just wondering if its been slow for anyone else or its just me    lol

been on it a few times and had good nights and bad ones. its as weedave says, all about tactics. im no expect at it and i learning these beaches everytime that i go out on it so i use each run as a learning exercise.

i have had flounder, turbot, coalies etc on it and i have seen bass caught on it.

hi wiwf

personnely i dont fish the entrance to any beach due to car lights, noise and basically anything that'll disturb fish even before you get there, the other spot you mention gets the jetskiers on it too - so maybe your just unlucky and not there when the fish are.
try further up into the gun range but be aware of the red flag rules. i find that end more productive than the spots you've mentioned.

i assume your there for a bass?
dont be put off as i know guys havent caught one in years? they are there but if your not fishing with the conditions in your favour then you have far less chance of getting one. my own bass fishing has been slower this year than the last two years though.

not to be rude but what are you expecting from the beach?

i cant advise on castlerock but i prefer the pier end most of the time. other beaches on this coast are throwing up all the usual flats, coalies, whiting, dogfish, bass, sea trout.

i had great success the other night with good size coalies using 1/2 peeler crab and black lug cocktails so maybe change up the bait tactics? clipped one up one down loop rigs fished at range was what was working.

benone has been full of crabs this year so maybe try shorter intervals between bait changes.
