wrasse

#1 Post by magpie01 »

Hi I was wondering wat hook size ppl find best for wrasse. Last time I was out I was using 2/0 on a float rig with some mackrel and limpet. I soon learnt that they wer 2 big as I got a good few bites but no fish! Also what do ppl find better when targeting wrasse lug or rag? Cheers

i would use rag over lug every time
and for hooks i would never go larger than a size 4 and usually stick with a size 6

interesting you should say that yngkmd

when wrasse fishing i only target the larger fella's - i'd normally stick on a 2/0 and a large worm bait or a half a crab. my biggest wrasse is 5lb 4oz and he nearly straightened a 2/0 mustad hook so i dont use small hooks anymore. just my preference though.

depends on what size fish iis in front of you and what you want to catch. If you want number of smaller fish, then smaller baits and smaller hooks. If you would like a single larger fish, then bigger baits and looks. I normally fish a size 1 or 1/0 for them.

I use a size 2 gamakatsu offset hook altho I find them bigger than most other size 2's. I've had wrasse from 1lb to 3.5lbs this summer on them.

If your looking for the bigger ones id be inclined to go as far as a 4/0 b940. But 2/0 should be plenty big for the bigger ones its just the biggies will often swallow a size 2/0. For the smaller ones don't be afraid to go too small. Maybe between 6 and 1. Again it all depends on preference.

normally i prefer to catch fish and not sit and wait for the big one which may or may not show up, im happy pulling a half to 2lb wrasse all day long rather than possibly one lunker, mind you, fishing for that one big one is something i have intended to put more attention to for a long time but generally once i get on the rocks and get into smaller fish its too hard to pull myself away :)

also my biggest wrasse is 6lb 8oz caught on a size 4, pulled it out off the rocks to the right of the gully at the high car park in portstewart, this was about 20 years ago mind...

Lug for me every time lad. When there is alot around use hardback crab this will be better for the bigger guys with the bigger mouths.
