First one is Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars and the second one is f%$^^%$d...

On a serious note, Tub Gurnard maybe? (tint of red in him) and Poor Cod maybe? (did he have a little barbel or beard though?)

i dont understand how some people can think that the first one is a tub gurnard! its 100% a grey gurnard.
red gurnard are red (mostly), grey gurnard are grey (sometimes mottled), and tub can be both red and/or grey in colour
however, tub gurnard have a blue colour on, or around the edges of, their BIG round pectoral fins!
the photo above is also definitely a grey gurnard because of the grey spot on the dorsal fin.

below is the tub gurnard, notice the blue around the edges of the big pectoral fins
tub gurnard.jpg
grey gurnard always have a big dark mark/spot on their dorsal fins, as is visible below. its the only gurnard to have this distinguishing feature
grey gurnard.jpg
as for the second id photo, i dont care! :D
its either a whiting, a pouting, or a poor cod. you wouldnt know unless you had a better photo detailing its features better. i'd go for a whiting as a pretty good guess tho

hope this helps

thanks yngkmd. yes, the grey gurnard has these 'legs' too but i guess they are tucked-up on the fish in the photo i posted (courtesy of google images...) - maybe because it is swimming off the bottom.

Portrush aquarium.. ? never been in it! ...bad times :(

i dont think its there anymore
it was filled with fish people caught locally and took into put in the aquarium
as a kid it was brilliant to see the same type of fish i was catching off ramore head or the blue pool swimming about in a big tank
no trip to the port was complete with popping in

Lads are the tubs the only ones to have that blue on the rim of their pectorals?

Id say your right with the grey gunard and whiting.
gfkelly - Did you feel a big pull when the otter/whatever it was ate it? You might have been pulling in an otter if he had taken the hook!! Imagine trying to unhook a pi$$ed off otter!!

definitely Jayball, the tubs are the only ones with the blue rim around the edges and all tubs have it.
also, the pectoral fins on the tubs are really big! Tubs can range in colour but most of the ones ive seen are in variations of red.
more photos below!.......
(the first photo shows a greyish coloured tub...)
