Advice/Help sought from anglers out west.

#1 Post by Hooker »

Well, with compulsory leave next week and not having a holiday booked and not getting enough fishing in this summer I have managed to convince a mate who has only ever fished a few times with me to go on a camping and fishing trip. Nothing to do with the fact he has a quality camping set up and a Land Rover Defender geared for off roading (comfort and shorter hikes for me). So we are heading west!

I have earmarked the Ballylongford area as a starting point as I am familiar with marks Like Carrig Island, Tarbert and Beal Strand. My dad being originally from there spent some time there over the years. Low tide marks in my meagre opinion. As for the plan I will have gear to suit almost all fishing from mini, to conger packed and ready to go Sunday morning not having to return east till the following Sun if the fishing and weather stay good and I don’t break my mates will to live with all the fishing. Might have to do days off roading to keep him happy.

I am a well seasoned angler and my mate is a novice but will get the hang of it because I won’t baby him. Will have to cast for him if distance is required. He doesn’t mind dead bait but live fish and bait he is still a bit wary of. I’m not looking to pillage the place; any marks given in confidence will remain that way.

I personally like catching wrasse, ray, bass on lures and the head wrecking mullet. Would love to get a trigger or stinger, saw three stingers in a comp in May near Tralee and want to get one myself. My questions are to guys familiar with the west coast , diesel and time not being an issue for the week just going to try catch and release as many good fish as we can (we prefer to eat steak to fish) . Right so the questions, any help will be appreciated and will be acknowledged in a hopefully long detailed report when we return.

1. Where to next, anywhere fishing well at the minute? (Tralee/Dingle? Beara? Clare Coast?)

2. Where to get bait, especially crab and tackle should we lose our shirts? We will try collect our own but not always
easy. I have a number for the shop in Ballylongford and know Landers in Tralee.

3. Any charter boats that would take two guys last minute and provide gear to be recommended?

4. Am I mad when every1 is heading to Wexford for bass and smoothy action?

There will probably be more questions if I get any replies, any help/advice/slagging for the essay style question will be graciously. It’s been a good 5 years since I went on a fishing adventure like this, suppose thats what happens when you finish Uni and get a real job as my Mam would say.

Cheers for reading,
Hooker

I am biassed, however, head for Sheeps Head and the Beara Peninsular.
Place Beara in search the contact details for Paul Harris will become apparent.
plenty of camping on the Beara and the area is stunning, most of all the fishing is great.
