First conger of the year
People:Me and fishy1987
Duration: No sure. Few hours
Tide: Rising
Weather: Cold and windy
Bait: Mack + lug
Rigs: Pirks and 3hook flappers
Results: 1 conger
Report: After hooking a few congers recently and not landing one between spat hooks, snoods being bit through and so on, i was determined to land one so we decided on a few hours fishing hoping for a few wrasse and conger. Landed on the mark and set up a 3 hook flapper wit lug and a pirk wit a mack head. I was fishing the pirk one turn up from the bottom as it's a snaggy mark. The bait was only in the water a few minutes when the rod tip started to shudder before the fish took properly and nearly pulled the rod over the railings. I struck and got a bit of a scrap before i got the fish to the surface and pulled it into the steps where fishy grabbed the pirk and got the eel in for me. Few quick picks and a weigh in. 7lbs 2 oz. No monster but it's a start for the seasons eel fishing anyway. Also added a quick pic of my first haddock that i caught on board the camden mist out of crosshaven. Fine boat and great skipper. Paul really put in the work to put us on the fish and it wasn't easy that day. Fishing was patchy but if there's any fish about, paul's the man to find them.

Thanks oli. You should try fishing for them some day. Great fight.oli wrote:well done Evan,u da conger king in Monkstown
They're great sport on the beach casters alright. Definitely worth targeting anyway. On some of the marks i fish you could consistently catch fish around 20lbs and bigger when the season really gets going in autumn.southaussie wrote:Well done, both the fish look great. Thanks man. I was delighted to get the haddock alright. My dad was even happier. Fish suppers all round.tight lines wrote:well done even nice way to get started for the year fine haddock too
Cheers john. I must try that mark i met you at before when i lost my wing mirror. I'd say there's a few big eels lurking around there.bhoy32 wrote:nice fisheys well done evan

Re: First conger of the year
I've had big ones bite through lines on me alright. I now use 250lb line and haven't had any trouble. Another thing i did before if i didn't have line heavy enough is to put a load of beads on above the hook and tie a stop knot above the beads to hold them in place. The congers are then biting the beads instead of the line. Or some silicone tubing does the trick too.grady wrote:nice conger evan, im also will go hunt for them end of the week in donegal there is plenty of them around, friend of my he was out last friday managed few of them best was 14lb and has lost another 15 due to tackle as swivels or line been snaped, that's mean some monsters down there, well will see that
